My Transfer Prospects?

I went to Old Dominion University for 3 years and after 90 credits I have a 3.3 GPA. I was an International Studies Major.

I have a lot of extracurricular perks including-
Eagle Scout
Studied Abroad for a semester
Honor Society
I got Dean's List for 4 semesters

I have no idea what my chances are for getting into a better college. I feel like I have a moderately good GPA at an average college.

Would I get accepted into American University or a school of similar caliber (GWU). I know no one can definitively answer that, but I have no idea how competitive I am. Is UTAustin out of reach? UNC Chapel Hill, Penn State, SoCal?

I guess I need help determining my stretch, middle and safety schools

I honestly hate ODU due to my own opinions and I really just want to get out of here and into a better school.

You need to contact each of these institutions and find out if they admit transfer students who have as many credits as you have, and how many years you would need to be on their campuses in order to complete your degree. If you are just plain fed up with college and want to finish ASAP, you should check out UMUC UMUC would accept up to 90 credits, and depending on your major you could be done in just a year more. Penn State has a similar program. There may be one associated with one of the universities in Virginia as well.

Agree with happymomof1 that the first cut issue for you will be the number of credits you currently have.

Most (not all) schools require you to earn ~60 credits toward your degree at their institution; and they usually limit how many credits you can come in with and won’t let you “forfeit” credits you’ve already earned to stay under that limit.

So let us know if you’ve checked that for the schools you’re targetting. Then we could move on to discussing your prospects. Also, what are you hoping to do immediately after getting your BA and what are you doing right now (sounds like you were at ODU, but aren’t there right now)?

Because I’m thinking your best option might be to stick it out, maybe take some summer credits at another campus to shorten up the hours you spend at ODU, and move quickly on to your next step (grad school, job, internship… whatever).

Or limit yourself to the smaller universe of schools which will accept Senior transfers.

BTW, I think your “stats” make you competitive for a lot of options… it’s your almost-senior standing that could be the biggest issue.

I just checked American and UTAustin and American allows 75 credits to transfer and UTAustin allows 60. Neither college mentioned a cap on credits.

I am at ODU now finishing up my semester. I would want to apply for the March first deadline at most schools.

If there is no cap, and you are willing to pay for two more years of school, then go ahead and apply. If you are accepted, they will go through your credits and pick and choose which ones to transfer for credit, and which ones to give you advanced standing for. You should be prepared to negotiate for the most favorable use of your previous coursework.

Is that a type re “March 1st deadline?” It says April 29 on my calendar, lol.

Before you devote much time to applying to any of those schools, I’d strongly recommend you contact Admissions and specifically ask whether you can transfer in, given the number of credits you’ve already earned.

It would be a shame to spend the money and time, only to find out that you’re disqualified due to a cap that isn’t mentioned on their website.
