My UCLA Situation

I was ecstatic when I received the notification that UCLA had admitted me since it has been my dream school since the 7th grade. However, at the end of my first semester in December of my senior year I got a D letter grade in AP Microeconomics. I immediately notified UC admissions of my grade and I explained to them that I would be dropping one of my classes next semester to accommodate for college prep economics. I dropped my Classical Fiction and Film class since it was an english class and I was already signed up to take another English class(Expository Reading and Writing) in the same semester. So I told UC admissions that instead of CF&F I would be taking college prep econ (instead of AP Micro since it's only taught the first semester) and also taking college prep U.S. Government. At my school Econ and Government classes are only a term long so taking both those would cover that semester class block. My reasoning for it was that taking these classes was to help prepare me for the AP tests I'm taking in May. I received a notification from UC Admissions stating that they had forwarded the updates to the schools that I applied to so I thought end of story right?
When I got the acceptance from UCLA, I emailed them to confirm that they got my schedule change/grade report and they replied back stating that they had.
UCLA's actual reply said,"Our office has received your data change, however, your senior grades are not used in the UCLA admissions process, only the strength of your senior program. Since you have been admitted to UCLA, please submit a Provisional Problem Form to report your update. You can access the form through our decision site under the Academic Changes tab."
I completed the Problem form, but then I got a reply that says,"We received the updated information you recently submitted regarding your course work and grades. We will review your changes in the context of your overall record, and will let you know whether they affect your admission within 15 working days. You may be offered a revised provisional admission contract, or in some cases, your offer of admission may be withdrawn."

So now I'm freaking out, upset and worried that my offer of admission is going to be withdrawn. Do y'all think that UCLA will take into consideration the fact that I still immediately notified them in January of the situation and what I planned to do about it? And will they also take into consideration that I maintained my GPA above a 3.0 NW and that I was taking AP Environmental Science, Psychology, and AVID Senior Seminar which all have a heavier workload than AP Microeconomics?

Unless someone else here has had a similar experience or work with admissions, then nobody can tell you anything for sure. It’s good, however, that you submitted these changes as soon as possible. I do believe there are some conditions regarding your provisional admission, such as maintaining at least a 3.0 GPA or not receiving grades lower than C. I do not remember the exact conditions, but they should be outlined in your admission letter. Please refer to those conditions, and make back-up plans in case your offer of admission has been rescinded.

Im in a similar situation to you.

For my senior year, i started in a public high school instead of the online high school i went to for Junior year while recovering from cancer treatment. For my senior 1st semester, i got a C in AP English, AP Statistics, and Bs in the rest of my classes.

I called them up, explained the situation, and they said they thought i would be fine. Since the condtions are that your admission is in danger if you get 1 D, 1 F, or 3+ Cs, or your overall High School GPA at the end of your senior would fall below 3.0 unweighted.

What were the grades in your other classes? Because the admissions lady said to me they usually only pull people that look like their seriously slacking off, like multiple D’s and Fs, like intentional senioritis.

Well for my first semester I got:
B - AP US Government and Politics (it was a term long class)
D - AP Microeconomics
A,A - Psychology
B,B - AP Environmental Science
B - AVID Senior seminar

I also explained to them that I had a bunch of stuff going on during this time. I came out as a lesbian to my older brother who was in visiting and he rejected me, and just the whole situation ended up getting me off track. Also I’m the event coordinator for a social justice youth group and during this time, I was busy planning a toy/gift drive for a food bank that caters to people with HIV/AIDS along with planning a winter dance for the kids in my youth group/community. Hopefully they take that into consideration my situation when reviewing my application…

But what would getting those grades do to your total high school un weighted GPA?

I honestly can’t remember since I don’t have my transcripts with me showing that semester, but my progress reports were handed out yesterday and my total non weighted is at a 3.42.

talk to someone at UCLA on the phone first. It should be ok, but again, gotta check with the staff.
