Mystery Box

What are you putting in the white box?

I just wrote down a bunch of stuff that interest and describe me. A lot of others put down really fancy pix. The important thing is whatever you put in there should gives the readers a sense of who you are, what you interest in, that kind of stuff.

That is my opinion, goodluck, be creative.

Would it be a little over the top to draw an acceptance letter from Rice in the White box? I was thinking of doing that but than thought that is probably what everyone draws.

That's cool, but it seems like a giveaway already that an acceptance letter appeals to anyone who sends an application to Rice. I would put in something that uniquely expresses/represents who you are. Like something you would put in a collage. Just be creative.

To be honest, I don't think the box plays a major role in the whole admissions process. It's probably just there to entertain the adcom as they're reading through all those applications a day. I know people who put all sorts of different things in that box, ranging from the really lame to pure creativity, and are currently students at Rice.

Of course, I do hear that they get irritated by people who put rice (the food) in the box or draw something outside of the white box to represent how they "think outside of the box." Use good judgement/taste and be creative with it.

Rice inside the box???? That is the most idiotic thing I have ever heard. It would be funny if that is all the admissions officers looked at before rejecting you.

Good idea / bad idea:

Good idea: Be creative.
Bad idea: Be creative just like everyone else (i.e. rice in the box)

Good idea: Think outside the box.
Bad idea: Interpret "think outside the box" literally.

Good idea: Consider multiple dimensions.
Bad idea: Writing an essay on quantum physics as they exist in the 8th dimension... inside the box.

Have fun, people! :-)

Animaniacs?

Actually, The MOB.
But I believe the Animaniacs' use (of which I was unaware) predates The MOB's use.

MOB? The Rice Marching Band? Or are you referring to a different MOB...

Rice University's world-famous (non-)Marching Owl Band.
That'd be the one.

I'm actually not sure where "good idea/bad idea" dealy started, but my first memory of it was when I was about 5 years old, when the Animaniacs did it. What a good tv show.

Were you a former MOB member? They should have the conductor (or whatever) of MOB be referred to officially as "The Godfather".

This will be my 6th year as a MOBster, actually.
And we call him "Fearless Leader" -- that's from Rocky & Bullwinkle, fyi. :-) A pioneer among satirical TV shows.

JimmyEat, we actually used to have a Catholic priest on tuba, and we used to call him the God-Father.

Heh. That's pretty awesome.

what is this white box about?
is this in the Part II of the application?

Yes, it's an empty square on Part II that's yours to fill with whatever.
