Does this box even matter?

The Box isn't a make-or-break sort of a deal, in terms of admission, but it's a rite of passage for all Rice students. Everyone remembers what they put in The Box. If you do something trite for your box (like glue uncooked rice in the box so it ends up all over the floor of the admissions office... they're not too keen on that...) they won't reject you because of it, but having an awesome box can help bump you over the brink. It's to see what you do when you're thrown a curve ball. It's different, no other college really has anything like it on their app, and it shows Rice's individuality... and gives you an opportunity to showcase your individuality, too.

(I made my box into an interactive chemistry experiment.)

I think I'm gonna attach my ear

Trite. That's what Van Gogh put in his box.

Try something that's been a little less 'done'. ;)

My dd put a piece of fabric in it. I don't imagine it makes much difference what you put in....

a family picture

I put an outline of Alaska and a jumping salmon in one of the corners.

Submitting for ID, but I'm planning on getting out my camera and taking a b+w picture of my friends (nicknamed "the bench"). I'm going to develop the picture on matte thats a little smaller than the box. Underneath I'm going to just put a small note about shutter speed, film speed, and all that good stuff. :D

I stapled a 100$ bill on the box. I thought about putting two 50$s or five 20$s but that seemed too cheap.

...
Kiddin'. I drew a chess set. =)

Definitely too cheap. Rice's endowment didn't grow to >$3B by having stingy applicants, you know. ;)

A collage of stuff I like. I know its been done, but all well. Im not a very artsy person.

Whatever you all do, don't spend a lot of time on the box. My guess is it is to keep the applicant file readers somewhat entertained as they plow through hundreds or thousands of pages.
