myth or not?

i apologize if this is in the wrong section

so some of my senior friends and i were talking and i really dont have that snazzy of a GPA. so i was telling them, cause i want to have AT LEAST a 4.2 by the end of next year (junior year) so they were like ... "you can take classes at a community college, and if you end up with an a it will count for 5 points into your GPA when colleges are calculating your GPA"

and i was just wondering if that was true? cause i took a class at my community college the summer before this year (sophomore year), and they said that i should think before taking the class (cause it shows up on my transcript ... blah blah blah), i ended up with an a in the class. and i'm considering taking psychology this summer, and i probably will regardless whether it counts in my GPA or not ... i just have to work out my schedule but yeah.

is this a myth or is it really true?

it all depends on your high school -- they are the ones who determine what classes show up on your transcript, whether they count towards your GPA and whether and how they are weighted.

also keep in mind that many school recalculate the weighted GPA, so your unweighted GPA may be more important depending on the school you are applying to.
