Naps

Yeahh everyone, my medical exam finally got through after hrs of calling dodmerb and concorde. I had my interview with my blue and gold rep. and he was thrilled. I brought my application for naps in and signed it on the spot I was happy, but now I'm stilled scared, but yet, it's what I want, and if it's what I want maybe it will be worth it. From what I hear so far, maybe naps is an high honor after all. GO NAVY! BEAT ARMY.

he made a copy of it and after reading it, I didn't initial it I just put a check mark by accept, so I hope that doesn't count against me. the blue and gold rep. filled out the form, I just signed my name at the bottom in cursive.

CONGRATULATIONS!!! Signing day is a day we'll never forget.

Rosa

"maybe naps is an high honor after all." HEY! There's no maybe's about it! Congrats!

Think about it: You are in the top 150 or so who just missed getting into the Academy directly.

150 out of what, 30,000 applicants? Maybe 1,200 got in on the first pass?

So....

1,200/30,000 = 4% USNA acceptance rate
(1,200+150)/30,000 = 4.5% NAPS/USNA acceptance rate
150/(30,000-1,200) = 0.5% NAPS acceptance rate

There's the raw data. Now you tell me getting into NAPS isn't a high honor.

Go on. I dare you...

:)

ETA: Oh, and one other thing. Guess what the acceptance rate from NAPS into USNA is for those who pass NAPS and decide they still want to go? Yep, 100%.

So basically, the USNA accepotance board sits down, grabs a list of NAPSters, then starts ADDING ON THEIR CLASSMATES.

Still doubtful?

While Zaphod's numbers may be a little off, his message is right on target! Around 11,800 applied for the class of 2009- in the neighborhood of 1240 received direct appointments. Naps takes in around 230-240 nowadays, and the foundation program adds another 80-84 to the class. "You have a seat in the Class of 2010- it is yours to loose." It is a highly selective process- direct admission, Naps or the foundation program- being selected for any one of them is an honor and, if offered, something you can feel very proud of. Think of it this way- those accepted to NAPS or the foundation program last spring were the FIRST to be selected for the class of 2010....if you are offered the program this year, you will be amongst the first for the Class of 2011! Congratulations!

Hey, I just realized that NAPS is EA for the class of 2011! ...which undoubtedly will consider itself superior to the class of 2010. (Just as I'm sure the class of 2010 will say they were "the last real plebe year...")

Thanks for the perspective Zaphod :)

Only 11,800?

Geez! My class had 25,000 I think! (It was the year after Top Gun, so go figure.)

Unless my numbers are COMPLETELY off.

As for the 150 or so, that doesn't include the folks there for the USCGA, hence the smaller number.

So what is this "foundation" program?

Oh, and for the record, 1991 had the last real Plebe Year. Please make a note of it. ;)

Zaphod -- Why am I not surprised to hear you say that... ;)

Total applications have hovered around 11,000 to 12,000 for quite a while now. There was a bump upwards after 9/11, but it dropped back to "normal" levels last year.

Of course, if you prefer to believe the trailer for the upcoming "Annapolis" movie: "Fifty thousand young men and women applied to this Academy, only twelve hundred and seven of you were deemed worthy enough to pass through these gates, most won't make it!"

I for one, can't wait to watch this one next month at the Annapolis Mall on a Saturday afternoon! "A place where heros are made and legends are born."

There's no way my number can be right, then. I remember my class was selected from a HUGE (at the time) number, but maybe it was closer to 15K.

Well, we'll just chalk that little error up as a sea story! ;)

As for that "movie" that's coming out, I find myself struggling not to hurl my lunch at my laptop. The first sign of trouble was when I saw it wasn't even filmed at USNA. BAD SIGN. If there's one place the Navy would kill to show off in a good light, it's USNA. They would have helped if the story was good.

I think this is going to be a hatchet job of the highest order. :(

What an utter crock.

Of course it's a crock -- but the mids I know are just chompin' at the bit to go see it! There was a great spirit spot at the Air Force game: "Fifty thousand apply... twelve hundred are admitted... the rest go to Air Force..."

I was told that when the trailer first came out the USNA network slowed to a crawl while the mids played it over and over (with tears of laughter in their eyes I'm told.) One commented on the action scene of a plane crashing into a ship "I must have missed that evolution during Plebe Summer". :)

So many really are looking forward to the movie just to have a good laugh -- that's why I'll make sure to attend a showing at the Mall during Saturday liberty hours.

Closest I ever came to something like that was when "Heartbreak Ridge" came out.

As soon as that idiot USMC Major said, "Annapolis, Class of ??", this rumbling groan rolled through the theater as we all rolled our eyes in disgust.

This one sounds like it's gonna be fun though. I'm jealous of you, now that I think about it!

LOL!

Yep! That sounds like Midshipmen, all right! :D

So what is this "foundation" program?

[/quote]

The foundation program is actually sponsored by the USNA alumni- as with NAPS, the admissions board refers approx 600 kids to the foundation program of which they select 80 (give or take a few) for sponsorship. The program is linked to 24 schools (at current count)- Jr colleges, private schools that offer PG years, and military schools- to which the candidates selected for sponsorship attend primarily to strengthen some aspect of academics (similiar to NAPS but without the military component, unless a military school is chosen). The cost of the program runs from $8,000 to $35,000/yr depending on the school (cost is divided between family contribution and USNA foundation scholarship- the ratio differs based on financial formula with the families picking up the bulk of the costs). While academics is the primary reason for referral, there are other reasons as well- too far down on nomination slate, redshirting for athletics, etc....just to name a few. Like NAPS, the candidates have a "seat" in the following class, providing they do well academically, pass another CFA, and secure a nomination. Most make it- out of 84 or so last year, only 2 did not gain admission the following year from what we have heard. For the past several years, the graduation rates from USNA for foundation kids has been about 10% higher, on average, than those directly admitted, which is something to consider as well. In short, just another avenue to reach the goal.

oiixxg, I also would love to be sitting in an Annapolis movie theater on the weekend the movie comes out to see the mids' reactions! You're right, the kids are really excited that their school is the subject of a full-length movie, albeit one filled with inaccuracies and more fiction than fact. On the other hand, the plebes are so media-deprived, they're easily amused. Hey, when's the last time they made a movie about MIT? (sorry, I couldn't resist that...)
Well, I'll just have to settle for a couple of days in San Diego at the Poinsettia Bowl. (I saw that spirit spot during the Navy/Air Force game--it was so funny! I'm still drying out...)

Ahh...Your perfectly entitled :). Apprentice, 9PM...http://web.mit.edu/

My CVW is the opening weekend of Annapolis the movie :)

lucky you.

Heh...I wouldn't know what to expect on opening week for the movie at the Naval Academy.

Hysterical laughter??

Today at school people came up to me and said Congrats you got in. I didn't tell any one where I applied. Come to find out there was an article written on me in the our Regional news paper today stating that I signed to USNA Prep and I truned down all other college choices like Cornell, Nebraska, LSU, Wisconsin(madison), Columbia, Brown, etc. shall I go on...
