Nasa Sharp

So how will you negotiate with your school so that you can get out earlier? NASA SHARP starts pretty damn early, well before finals are ready for many districts.

our school's in the process of starting school earlier so this year we get out june2 i think. next year we're getting out even earlier.

I've talked to my school and they said that it would be fine to leave a little early because it was an "educational experience" and not just a family trip or anything. I just have to get my teachers to sign a piece of paper that says it is okay for me to leave early. This shouldn't be a problem for any of my teachers because they were all really excited for me to just get an interview and I can't wait to tell them I actually got accepted!

Regarding finals, I only have 1 final, a Spanish conjugation test that I will take early. For the rest, there is only projects I will turn in the day before I leave and for AP Euro, the AP test will already be over.

I think the USPS people around here held my letter a day late just to torture me. :) But anywho, I got in....

First Name: Amy

Accepted Location: University of Wisconsin-Madison

Residence: somewhere in Northeast Ohio

Interests: Medicine, biology, nanotechnology, fractals..uh..I forget exactly what I put...

Grade: Junior

Sex: Female

Ethnicity: Asian

95% sure I'm going...I'd be missing out on a class trip to France; that gives me pause.

Interesting Stuff: Well. I'm really into the whole science fair/research scene...competed at ISEF last year, as well as done research locally with professors. I've also run cross country for 6 years - anyone want to run with me this summer? :)

Also, I registered for the ACT for June 11, but we start the NASA program the 5th. What do I do? Maybe I can - yuck - take it there?

Bump
I interviewed for Nasa Sharp commuter program last week. Do you know when I'll find out if accepted? Is anyone here commuter and accepted?

Well - NASA SHARP recognizes that stats aren't everything. WHich is true in the real world. Maybe NASA SHARP admissions is acting like Ivy League admissions - accepting people who might fit in with what the program wants more...

Hey, i'm wondering what is the acceptance rate for NASA sharp and how many people get in each year? lol, you guys probably said that somewhere in the forum, but i'm too lazy to read every page. Congrats to those who are going.

The acceptance rate was under 10% this year I believe. About 140 people get in each year. It's always competitive, but I think that NASA SHARP doesn't weight stats as heavily as they weight overall interest in one of the STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics).

Wow, that's hard to get in. why does the website say 400 people get in?

It counts commuter as well

sims did u get in?

who's already faxed their papers in?

No, I was one of numerous rejected Asian males.

Well, it was a dream of mine to get research this summer, had I stayed in high school so that I could have had a shot to Intel/Siemens/RSI, no matter how low. But now that I decided to go to college next year, there isn't anything that research experience could benefit me exceptionally in, except for REUs. And REUs will probably reject a freshman me regardless of whether I have HS research or not so I really should be aiming for research next summer, not this summer where acquaintance with profs is far more important.

ugh i got rejected from SHARP too. Im a sophomore though and i guess most of the people they accept are juniors, right? Well i hope i get into governors school for math science and technology or this 3 week science/computer course im applying to at stanford. Ugh, the dean at my school though is a complete idiot and he screwed up my app for governors school, so I doubt im gonna get in. Gah....my college app is gonna look much worse than i had planned for it to be.

just because you don't do research over a summer doesn't mean your app's going to be bad. i did nothing over sophomore summer besides taking 2 online classes, taking dance, and volunteering. it actually FILLED my summer up. and i was happy. no one's going to look at your application and say "they're a wonderful candidate but...what's this?...they didn't have a perfectly productive summer even though summers are for relaxing?" -- there are plenty of things you can do over the summer that are still considered productive. it's YOUR life.

has anybody else gotten into UMich? or am i alone....

oh yeah, neha, wsup with that shemale stuff? is that a joke or foreal. just wonderin.

Im trying to figure out if perhaps the reason i was rejected was a bad reccomendation from my physics teacher, who the dean had told me previously that he usually didnt give students perfect reccomendations. Could someone someone tell me if these stats look good enough?

Im a white male sophomore, GPA 3.97, my school lets me take only take AP european history this year, but im taking honors chem, honors physics, honors algebra 2/trig, and forensic science too. I also took two semesters of computer programming before.
