National College Match - 2009-2010

Ok so I’ve been reading this entire discussion (all 44 pages!) and I still have a question. If Stanford is the only QB partner school that I am really interested in, would I have a higher chance just applying there using EA or trying to be matched through QB? thanks

even though QB recomends using jr year teachers to write your letters of rec; is it okay to use a soph teacher ? i really want to use my AP euro teacher [whos also my CSF advisor] would i lose pts over that? or should i use my chem honors teacher?

most of my jr year teachers are retired anywa s=/

Yeah i’m actually having to get the # of my math teacher cause he just quit this year lol. Guess he’s not getting that school email…XD

Anyways, i don’t think you’ll “lose points.” If you’ve sustained a relationship with this teacher then you should be golden. It might help though if you ask him to casually mention that even after he taught you, you maintained a relationship through his being your CSF (what the heck does that stand for?) adviser.

@CARDINAL HOPEFUL: You should most definitely use Questbridge- it identifies you into a select group of students and gives you an advantage with the volume of information you are able to give the school about yourself. Not to mention, if you’re matched, you’ll recieve a full package.

@Ju_liaa: California Scholarship Federation; I’m sorry to hear you have to go through all that trouble.
@hiilikeyoux3: It’s fine! Try for your other rec(s) to be from junior year teachers, though.

Does my EFC have to be $0 for me to be matched with Stanford through Questbridge?

Ok i have another question… Do you just guess your EFC or is there something that tells you your exact EFC?

Financial aid online calculators:

[College Calculators - savings calculators - college costs, loans](<a href=“College Board - SAT, AP, College Search and Admission Tools”>How Much Will College Cost – BigFuture | College Board)

Some colleges have different policies, but the link above will get you started.

Alright thanks! I got a 0, and i appologize if this sounds absolutely ridiculous, but what exactly does that mean?
Like…is it bad? Good?

it means you’re expected to pay 0 dollars for college so financial aid should cover all the costs of college for you.

Hi everyone, I’ve been reading the forum for a long time looking for advice on college apps but this is the first time posting.
I saw the page with all the stats of people who became finalists, (race, income, etc.) but i was wondering if anyone saw anything about religion. I’m an atheist and pretty much every polls say that America hates atheists so I was wondering if I should emphasize that?
I don’t really care about religion so if it will give me a better chance of getting the scholarship i’ll put i’m a satanist if i have to. so please advise.

hey allll! I have a question…CAN YOU APPLY TO OTHER SCHOOLS EARLY ADMISSION IF YOU KNOW/DON’T KNOW IF YOU’RE A FINALIST? I want to apply to my safety schools just so I know I have a back up. But does Questbridge allow that…Say I don’t know whether I’m a finalist or not, can I apply to schools outside of questbridge? THANKS!

@adfirmo: Call me a coward, but i am an atheist too and i declined to state my religion. I am all for standing up for myself and my people (trut me i’ve gotten into fist fight because someone threw a rock at a friend), but this is the opportunity of a lifetime. You’re right, atheists are the most hated group in America. Seeing as many people are religious (and religious people could be reading our apps), and seeing as many of the schools have ties, either historically or currently with religious activity, i just can’t bring myself to write ‘atheist’ on that app. I really need this, i won’t let someone’s bias on my lack of belief stop me.

On the other hand, they may see you as a brave and original thinker. I’m not risking it, but if you feel the need to express yourslef in that way, go right ahead.

Adcoms could care less about your religion … unless, of course, you are applying to Notre Dame or something. I think the question is asked for scholarship purposes, also as a data bank in case someone were to bring a discrimination suit against the school.

would you recommend applying to Questbridge if I go to a private school even though my parents income is less than 60k?
Also, should I apply if there’s really nothing much I could write about in the special essays?

QB applicants come in many forms, public school, private school, and homeschooled. Also, it is rediculous to think that ones religion or lack of it would be a negative.

I have said this before, ****, or get off the pot,

QB match students are not procrastinators!

@Cardinal Hopeful: There is ALWAYS something to write about; what makes you interesting, how you/your family copes with financial hardship, etc. etc. If you think you fit the bill, APPLY. Listen to GA2012MOM, and just. do. it.
@xctf: You can’t apply to other schools ED if you are a finalist, but you can if you aren’t.
@Ju_liaa: I don’t want this to become a religious discussion or anything, but the area I live in is about 50-60% atheist and agnostic, so there’s a lot more hatred towards those of a spiritual nature than the other way around. I think that rather than there being any single “hated group”, there is just too much hate all around from every group. Sorry, off topic, but I felt compelled to contribute.
However, on that point, you won’t be discriminated against for being atheist. On the other hand, if you try to push your beliefs or state openly that you think that your ideas are better than everyone else’s, that may (probably will) get an admissions officer’s goat- even if they share the same ideas. Many, many kids are atheists/agnostic, so I don’t think that you’ll be seen as brave or original, as these are ancient ideas. Also, all the partner colleges aren’t religious. Notre Dame is hardly Catholic; most consider it to be so only in name/spirit.

@alexandrafitzmor: Yeah i wasn’t saying that they are all religious, just that most, in some way or another, have religious ties. Also, speaking statistically, atheists are in fact the most hated group right above gays and muslims. It’s a sad truth considering the fact that none of these groups should be on that list. In any case, i understand where you are coming from. There are some places where the opposite is true.

@cardinal: I’ve heard of a few QB kids form private school. Usually they’ve been there on scholarship or the tuition is sustained by the family because it isn’t that expensive (one girl said the cost of her school was 4,000 per year). Also, why not ask your family for ideas about what to write? Before i asked my mom i only had like one thing…and afterwards about a million came up. It’s worth a shot.

Is it worth applying if income is upwards of 150k?.. we’re very interested in applying but i don’t want D to spend time on app., if financially we don’t qualify.
