National College Match - 2009-2010

I can’t imagine a circumstance where someone with upwards of $150,000 income would qualify. Typically, most finalists’ families make less than $60,000 with a few families with unusual circumstances and incomes over that amount also qualifying.

@monmouthmom: I agree with 2blue, I think 150K is a little too high for QB.

Does anyone know when we find out about Collegeboard AP Awards and National Merit Semi-Finalist notification? (I know I got both) Can I list them on the Awards section, “September 2009” ?

Yes, if you are sure of them, such as AP with Distinction, go ahead and list them.

I listed them - you WILL receive notification before your QB app is due.

is “honor roll” and such worth putting?

is “AP scholar with honor” worth putting?

BTW, how do I know if my 4 AP scores (1 from soph year, 3 from junior year) are under the same identity because you need 4 scores for that award. And when do we receive these award notifications

Your AP award should be under your name, and if I remember correctly, your SS#? So why would they not be under one identity?

Put down awards in order of importance. If AP scholar with honor fits into the allotted slots, yes.

Honor Roll, that’s questionable.

does anyone find the “activity” list on the application to be “not enough” to represent who you are and what you actually do? fyi, I’m part of many clubs and hold leadership positions, I play a sport, and have several very strong interests

So I shouldn’t put Honor Roll? I don’t have many other “honors”. I don’t know where you guys are getting them lol

This is every award and honor I could find… :(

Freshman Year, CA
-Most improved for Cross Country
-Coaches award for Track
-Principal’s Honor List (April 2007)

Sophomore Year, CA
-MVP for Cross Country
-Coaches award for Track
-Principal’s Honor List (July 2008)
-Nominated for California Scholarship Foundation (CSF) but didn’t pay the dues because we were moving.

Junior Year, UT
-“Students with Keys to Success” (March 2009) (nominated by my teachers for character)
-Academic Letter “I” (March 2009)
-Questbridge CollegePrep Award Recipient
-3rd Place in FBLA State Comptetitions
-Year-long Honor Roll Achievement (June 2009)
-AP Scholar with Honor (expecting this soon…)

Can anyone offer advice… I don’t know which ones to put on the app, etc. Do I explain what they are? (Because I think the QB app only lets you list their name and date.) Any help would be greatly appreciated.

And if I may ask for your brutal honesty… is this an embarrassing list for Stanford/Ivies?

flyingllama, if you have enough spots to put in Honor Roll, then do so.

xctf, do they still have an “additional information” section this year? If so, you can put any overflow there.

Well we can add as many honors as we want, so I will always have enough space for honor roll. Still… I can understand why it’s questionable so that’s why I’m really hesitating.

@flyingllama: Honor roll is practically an unmentionable when you get to the top-tier schools; nearly every applicant already makes that distinction. To pile on all the honors you’ve ever recieved makes it look like you’re trying to overcompensate for your mediocrity. I’d recommend putting down the very best awards you recieve, and perhaps those that you feel are relevant for your application as well. Other awards, like honor roll or Who’s Who aren’t remotely relevant and they are more likely to hurt you than help you.

alright thanks, it’s good you’re telling me this lol. so out of all that stuff i listed… which ones should I put down?

thanks for the advice everyone. but I think I’m just going to stick with my family’s religion, Buddhism. I don’t really want to risk being persecuted for being atheist. Besides, Buddhism sort of goes with my believes anyway…
I have another question about the gpa conversion. I saw the chart but my school’s system doesn’t seem to apply to that.
My school provides both weighted and unweighted gpa but they do it on a 5.0 scale. my unweighted is around 4.8 …out of 5.0 and weighted is 5.4 out of 5.0. so to convert it do i just subtract one?

No you’re probavbly better off making an inequality.

Is the Questbridge College Prep Scholar considered an award?

Guys i have a question.
How did you hear about QB? Because i see that many got the college prep scholarship…and i hadnt even heard of it in time to apply.
I just kind of found it myself…T_T

Ju_liaa, my D had never heard of QB. She thought she was going to the State Flagship on the Hope Scholarship. She was at a summer program, and I googled something, and cc came up. Through very nice other parents here, they told me about QB. When she came home, I told her she needed to apply. D thought I was crazy, because “nobody wins those things.” She started her app in August, and by November 30th, was a match to her dream school. Basically, the entire process was 3 1/2 months, btw I never want to live it again. :(

Haha i heard it on CC too…form last year’s thread. It just surprised me that no one in the community, even my school, had ever heard of it. I am the only student from my school who’s ever done it…probably even known about it.

On the teacher recommendation page, the form asks for the phone number. Are they asking for our phone numbers or the recommender, and if they are asking for the recommender, does anyone have any suggestions as to how we could ask them for their phone numbers, since it is summer break right now?
