Does anyone know what scores people need to qualify, and what it is exactly one is qualified for? Is it different by state? I'm in MA.

I too would like to know this information, I'm Hispanic :D

Russia was this PSAT? What score did you get?

The qualifying scores for PSAT change each year from state to state. Go to Collegeboard's website and view PSAT - Scholarships - National Hispanic Recognition Program. The cutoff score for the Oct'06 PSAT for Oklahoma is 181. High schools have just recently been informed by Collegeboard of the students who initially qualify for National Hispanic Recognition based upon the PSAT score. Now, the high school must send Collegeboard verification of Hispanic ethnicity and the student's GPA. This addtional information will determine which students are Honorable Mention and which students are finalists.

Do you know the one for Texas? Because I got a 188 and I'm pretty sure I bubbled hispanic on the sheet and none of my counselors have told me anything and I'd love to be in the Program!

I don't know the cutoff score for Texas for the Oct'06 PSAT but another thread lists the Texas cutoff score for 2005 as 181. From what I understand, the scores vary only slightly from year to year to your 188 sounds very promising. You need to ask you counselor if your highschool has been contacted by Collegeboard with a list of high-scoring Hispanic students because the counselor needs to respond back to Collegeboard with verification of your Hispanic ethnicity and GPA. If your counselor says that your name was not listed, I would not stop there. Contact Collegeboard to make sure either way. Good Luck!

Waaah I really hope I checked off Hispanic! I'd love to be NHRP!

You need to understand that scholarship money does not automatically come with being a Nat'l Hispanic Scholar, not like Nat'l Merit. Students who become Nat'l Hispanic Scholars have their names placed on a CD-ROM which is then sent to colleges/universities that subscribe to this. It is at this point that the colleges/univ come knocking at your door. The CD-ROM containing the names of all these high-scoring Hispanic students is the very important part of this program.

I know, I'm not looking for the money, I just want the colleges to know me!

The colleges will know that you're a motivated Hispanic student who will be an asset to their campus community.

Check school websites for the current information, but as of a couple of years ago, these schools had merit scholarships for NHRP: UArizona, UIowa, UTexas-Austin, TCNJ, BU & URochester.

Many others have programs aimed at URM's:
merit scholarships - IU-B, UVM, NEU, Rutgers, Denison, CU, UWisconsin, GWU, Lawrence, Kenyon, Bates, UNC-CH, JHU, WUSTL
paid visits - WUSTL, Amherst, Dartmouth, Cornell, Smith, Carleton, Swarthmore, CMU, Rice, Vandy, Tufts, Williams, Wesleyan, Kenyon, Macalester
free summer programs - CMU, Grinnell, Caltech, MIT

Remember, these are not comprehensive and may not be current, so check school websites!

I talked to a collegeboard official today and I'm eligible!!! :D:D:D omg I'm so happy, it makes up for a terrible week!

Now all I have to do is get onto my school about filling my information out!

Congratulations Eloquence! Best of luck in your college experience! My son was notified last week by his highschool that he was qualified based on the PSAT. Remember to followup with your counselor to make sure the additional information (verification of ethnicity & GPA) is sent to collegeboard this month.

They have AP tests this week so I guess sometime next week I'll talk to them. They denied me today but tomorrow I'll tell them that I spoke with collegeboard officials so they'll have to listen :D

Argh, I'll need to ask my college counselor about this (I'm latina) but I got a 233 - does that put me in the running, even if I'm from New York? So many New York kids get, like, perfect scores...:(

Does anyone know what schools subscribe to get the NHRP CD? Any Ivies?

Kameran, 233 is a wonderful score, it it way past the NMS state cutoff and the NHRP cutoffs are much lower. Definitely talk to your counselor, and if you don't get satisfaction, contact the NHRP directly. Your score will definitely qualify for NHRP.

Eloquence, I have never seen a published list of the schools that participate. However, several of the Ivies have dedicated diversity recruitment personnel, so I would assume they'd utilize this service.

Ah good because I'm looking to go to Penn (Go Quakers!) and anything to help my chances is good!

Now to get on my counselor's behinds to fill it out >_>

Shortly before getting my certificate for this program, I started getting Congratulations letters from schools.

Some of the schools included Penn, Duke, Stanford, UC, UTA, UN, UK, etc. There were some good offers, some not-so-good offers, and some lame 'congratulations and check us out' letters, but it's still a good deal overall.

all i can say....is i wish i was hispanic

Ditto, Duke. Seriously, I don't get why there are no National Asian Scholars or National fill in any ethnicity here Scholars.

But I guess that just comes with affirmative action.

If someone is a Hispanic living in an extremely affluent town, do you think being a National Hispanic Scholar would be significant?
