I have been asked and received an application to join the national honors society. One of the requirements is to write an essay showing examples of me acting as a leader and showing leadership. I do not know where to begin and I have no idea how my outline should be and how to write a strong essay. Please help me and give me advice on where to start.
I was invited to join NHS last year and, although they said that leadership was one of their top expectations for members, I have never taken what you might call a “formal leadership position” (i.e. student government, organizing a fund raiser etc.). (I think they mostly go by GPA- minimum requirement is 3.0). However, showing them through your essay that you have been a leader in day to day instances- say, group projects, contributing in class, or even perhaps through community service- may be enough. Maybe when working with others you have a tendency to provide good ideas, critique other’s work, keep the group on track, or guide them morally. Many people envision a leader as someone who is outgoing, gregarious, and can command a group simply by being present, but if you are not like that and are more of an introvert like myself, then you can probably come up with lots of examples of “quiet leadership” or even times when you have worked behind the scenes to improve group performance. Consider times when you did what you though was right even though others weren’t. You might also consider a paragraph or so describing what you consider real leadership to be.
Good luck with your essay- NHS is great!
