National Merit Commended Cut-off 2008: 16 April 2007

Grrrrrr... here's hoping tomorrow we will know the number! I'm quite a ways from Illinois, where the NMSC is, so we probably won't get the names of our high scorers until the end of this week. As I mentioned briefly in one of my last posts, the NMSC won't release what the cut-off number was until the principals all around the nation have had several days to inform the students.

I thought the NMSC never officially announced the cutoff... people just figured it out.

So is the principal supposed to inform you or do you just get a letter in the mail from NMSC?

I thought my older kid got a letter from NM at this point in the process saying he was a high scorer and including a form to select two colleges to be informed that he was a high scorer. Maybe NM sends these letters to the principal to be distributed through the school? (just as the score reports went first to the school).

My daughter got her letter today.

Wonderful! Any idea what the Commended cut-off is?

No, I'm no help there. Daughter scored high enough for NMSF so the commended cut-off is still an unknown. I only posted so that you all knew that the letters were starting to be received.

Did the letter come to your house or to the school?

We homeschool so the letter came directly to the house. It is my understanding that the letters are being sent to the school where the student attends.

"We homeschool so the letter came directly to the house. It is my understanding that the letters are being sent to the school where the student attends."

That means I won't get mine until about... June 7th.

My son just called from school. He said that he was told by his principal that the cut off for this year is 200. I hope that helps.

Thanks, soccerman32.

Was the cutoff 203 last year? If so, 200 makes total sense for this year with the writing section being different/more difficult by about 3 points. That should help folks with their expectations for making semi-finalist. Determine the semi-finalist cutoff trend for your state, estimate what the number would be if there were no changes to the writing section and subtract 3 points from that...should be real close to what it will be.

So last year Ohio's cutoff was 215. I think I should be able to get it with a 215 this year.

Still hope to hear what other people have to say about this. Not that I don't believe soccerman32, just wanna be sure =)

Yup, it's 200 according to my couselor. He gave us the letter from national merit scholarship coroporation saying we met requirements and that we will find out in September whether we are commended or semi.

Yay, that makes me so excited =)
