The score conversion by section is 213. My son scored a 1440. When you convert his total, it is 214. And he scored a 215 SI.
I find it it interesting that using the Concordance table on the first page (based on the total score) if a student has a Total score of 1470 it equates to a previous SI 222 but using the individual subscores on pg 4 of the concordance tables the 3 subscores my son had that created his 1470 then lead only to a 216 using the conversion to 2014. His actual SI on the report is 218 - but I do not really think it should be equivalent to a 216 from 2014 but maybe to a bit higher SI number from 2014, even if not a 222. I am not seeing how a 218 out of 228 is āreallyā more like a 216/240 - seems more like a 222/240. weāll see how it all turns out.
Yes. That is interesting. The range of scores for a 1470 is 218-223. R and W =38, math 35.5 = 223. And R and W = 36 and 35; Math - 38 = 218.
@jerzmaster: @sat225 That makes sense now. I think it would have been great is CB would have told everyone what percentile they are for each of the 3 subjects. The NMSC is based on the 3 subject scores and not the 2 subject scaled score (0-1520).
They did provide the percentile for each of the 3 subjects, didnāt they? Iām so confused. On the online report you get national/ user percentiles for reading, writing and math. You have to view the report online to see this. If you download the report it doesnāt capture this info.
@micgeaux @CA1543 I completely agree with your confusion. Iāve taken several students scores and really canāt reconcile the concordance tables with this yearās and last yearās scores. I think CB will have some significant changes in the tables when the final ones come out in May.
Iāll stop after this post, but I keep getting back to the 99th percentile, although on another discussion, some people said that the data was estimated for the percentages on the score reports??? But if you are well into the 99th percentile, then your chances should be great in almost every state. And for those states who historically qualified without being in the 99th percentile, than lower qualifying scores than the past seem to be plausible.
Last year, as a Sophomore, my D got a score of 220*. This year, as a Junior in Ohio, her score is a 223, so she and we are feeling pretty confident. I have two questions: First, I am trying to figure out by what percentage her score improved over last years SI. She really wants to know. I know itās not a difference of 3 points because all the numbers for the calculations are so very different. IāM not capable of that math. Second, can we feel pretty confident that in Ohio, she will most likely qualify for Finalist? She also is currently first in her class of 401, has a 99+ gpa, has taken a very rigorous schedule, is takeing many AP classes and has never had a C, ever. I canāt even remember a reported B. Fingers are crossed in our household. Thanks for your help!
@micgeaux I think you are absolutely right. The selection of commended and NMSF is based on your national and state percentile ranks, respectively. NMSC awards 50,000 commended&NMSF out of about 1.6 million test takers. 16,000 of that 50,000 will be NMSF. If you are in the top 1% of your state, you should get NMSF.
These are the ranges of SIs for various total scores. Since 1390 is in the 99th percentile, some SI score in that range would have to be a stating point.

@micgeaux My daughter had a 1450 with a SI of 217. Converting it, I also got 214.
@flashk Iāll convert your PSAT score to prior year SIās. I just need to know your childās 3 section scores and Iāll run them through CBās prelim concordance tables.
That so nice of you to offer. Thank you! I think what you are asking for is this - Reading 37, Language 37 and Math 37.5. Are those the correct numbers? Or perhaps you need this? She got a 1490, 740 on R/W and a 750 on Math.
Thank you again!
Also, last year her scores were Critical Reading 70, Math 70 and Writing 80, if that is helpful.
@flashk First of all your child did outstanding on the test! Based on the prelim concordance table from CB, your childās score converts to a 226 SI in previous PSAT test version. Even if you lived in DC (highest cutoff last year), your scores would still be NMSF.
I think I may have posted an intended response. If I duplicate, please forgive me. Her Reading this year was 37, Writing and Language 37 and Math 37.5. She got a 1490, R/W at 740 and Math at 750.
Thank you so much for your time!
@flashk Her converted section scores would be 75 reading, 74 writing, 77 math. I think the prelim concordance tables underestimate the conversion, so I really think her converted scores will be higher when CB make the final tables in May. I hope this helps!
Thank you, weāre very proud (even a bit in awe) of her.
Thank you so much for taking the time to do the conversion! We appreciate your help and the time you spent doing this favor for a stranger!
@paveyourpath I missed your question earlier. My daughters PSAT report only shows percentile for Math and then the combined Reading/Writing. It shows her test scores for all 3 sectionsā¦ but does not break those out by percentile. I can guess the Math section will be the same percentile, but the Reading vs. Writing I just donāt know.
This is what I donāt get @jerzmaster = How can a 37 Reading, 37 Language and Math 37.5 (223 SI in 2015) equate to a 226/240? This is literally 2.5 points off a perfect score. It seems like it should be higher- like 228/240. 226 seems too low.
@suzyq7 I completely agree with you. I think CB messed up the prelim concordance table, which I donāt think is a stretch considering the new test format and the issues they had releasing scores on time. In May, CB will issue a final concordance table that I think will be produce numbers that āmake senseā.
