National Merit Cutoff Predictions Class of 2017

Sorry, this is in CA. @mnpapa29

I believe for CA, the cutoff will be either 220 or 221 SI. I base this on concordance tables and the past CA cutoff SI of 223.

You have to admit. This is entertaining. SO grateful that SAT changed its test this year AND that Michigan chose this year to switch its mandatory test for juniors from ACT to SAT

@ambitionsquared Looking at concordance tables and CA state’s past cutoff SI of 223, I do not believe 217 SI score for this year comes out to 223 which is cutoff SI score for CA in the past. But again, it’s my best guess. I believe the cutoff for CA will be either 219 (slight chance), 220 (maybe), 221 (probable) and 222 (almost certain), and 223+ (for sure). Again, this is my best guess.

@appgodxoxo That depends on what state? If CA, I would say probable.

@websensation you are exactly right. Those who think that a 220 guarantees anything will be pretty surprised in September. Time will tell, of course. But the truth is that in very high cutoff states, there isn’t a lot of room for error. A single careless mistake, particularly in the writing section, could prove quite costly.

A 221 translates to a low 230 according to the official concordance tables. Can someone else guesstimate the cutoff for CA?

@appgodxoxo I’m sorry but you must be making a mistake. I carefully checked my daughter’s 222 on the concordance table and it translated to a 225. Not sure how you can get a 230 out of a 221.

And we would need the breakdown - what’s the math score and what’s the reading and writing score?

That’s a real bummer
would a 217 qualify in ANY state or is it just CA and other really high-scoring states that are going to have like a ridiculous 221+ cut-off?

@mnpapa29 You are exactly right also IMO. If you missed 1 or 2 in the Writing section, your SI score for Writing will drop a lot. My best guess for CA cutoff is 221 SI score, but 220 has a chance for CA. It’s a cruel numbers game. Basically, you can have the same 1470 score but that same 1470 score can end up as 219, 220, 221 or 222 SI scores. It’s really cruel and arbitrary. Even if you missed ZERO in Reading and Math sections but missed 4 or 5 in Writing section, you might not make it in CA.

This new PSAT scoring system is really whack

Does anyone have guesses for AZ? Prepscholar’s estimate is 201, which I assume is very off

@JuicyMango The SI score of 217 would probably have qualified you in around 40 states, but as you know, CA is 2nd highest cutoff state along with MA.

@websensation Thanks. Ah man I feel like I just swallowed my heart, really sucks to hear that but at least I’ll get commended.

I think a 217 score would qualify in a high fraction of states (i.e. out of 50) - but in a much lower fraction if you weight those states by population (the highest cutoffs are in high population states like CA, NJ, and MA I believe).

My daughter (also with a 217 in CA) already told me “damn, I told you we should have moved to Mississippi!”

@JuicyMango 217 SI score might actually have contained less number of WRONG answers total than 221 SI score. Like I said, if you missed 2 or 3 in Writing section, that would really bring down your Writing SI score. It really is cruel. That Prepscholar’s estimate cutoff table is really inaccurate.

So
a 221 won’t be national merit SF in CA?

I don’t understand the conversion. For a math score of 720 and reading of 660, with selection index of 204.
in michigan. How convert? Last year cutoff was 210.

@appgodxoxo IMO 221 SI score will PROBABLY make the cutoff for CA. But 220 may not.
