I believe 223 shall be a semifinlist for sure for CA, 218 for CA also has a very good chance as well.

does anyone know the national achievement cutoff????? i can't find data anywhere..... may be because it's really low?

why such a big '06 to '07 jump in the NY semi cutoff...218 would be great, but 221 wouldn't

hey guys
I was wondering if I could ask you a couple of questions-

first of all, I've heard from my friends that if you did poorly on the 2006 PSAT(I took it as a sophomore), then you don't get the chance to compete for the NHS no matter how high you get on the 2007 PSAT. For me, this was totally new information so I was wondering... I did do really poorly on the PSAT(190) but I believe I can raise that score to 220+ on the next one...

Another thing- how good should my PSAT score be if I'm aiming for semi-finalist? I live in MA so I'm assuming that i have to get near 230? I just want to see how much I have to study to get to that level... Thank you in advance for all your help!

I think your friends might be misinformed...perhaps what they were trying to say is that your sophomore scores have no meaning. In other words, they are thrown out and only your junior scores count, even if your soph score is higher. As for lgetting semi status, a 230 would get you semi anywhere in the country, including MA. That's a perfectly fine study mark to set, but a 225 would probably work just as well.

I have this vague feeling that a 221 won't be sufficient in NJ. Which sucks, because I got docked four points on the math section for mis-reading the coordinates on a single geometry problem.

Life, I need a hug.

ooo this just occured to me-
do you have to be a us citizen or permanent resident in order to compete in this? I'm not a u.s citizen nor a permanent resident so how would this work out for me?

You need to be either a US citizen or permanent resident to compete, otherwise, PSAT will just be a practice test for the SAT.

The kids at my daughter's school received their NM semifinalist letters this week. However the information is supposed to be confidential until Sept 12, when the numbers are released by the NMS office

Tutitionsaver - Look at the other thread, "Officail National Merit..." This topic is discussed in-depth there...the total confidentiality is a mis-reading/mis-interpretation of the NMS info. Only certain parts are supposed to be kept confidential.

NJ's was at most, 225, if it makes anyone better (minus, of course, the duh factor).

it sucks that I can't compete... So does that mean that no matter what I get, i can't even get commended for this?
