National Merit Finalist (Class of 2019) - rejection/acceptance letter

Hi can you tell me by looking at the UF acceptance letter where you find the
Honors decision? We don’t see anything in
Our letter in regards to it either way. Is there another place to check?

@somanyquestions9 - I believe honors should be indicated in letter. @gamom2023 - idk why really but he researched it on CC and weighed the perks and decided he was fine without. He knows engineering will be extremely demanding at UF. Application fatigue is real though and definitely had an impact with that decision as well. May have been a mistake but at the end of the day it was his decision.

Daughter is freshman at UF honors. She says it makes no difference at all. Some of the brightest students there are not in the honors program.
Still waiting for my son’s NMF result in Florida.

@mountainmomof3 Yes, I think the application/essay fatigue got to my son, as well. I’m not even sure he did all the things he was supposed to do. I would ask but then leave it up to him to make sure everything was done. As you said, it’s his decision.

@deligentintelligentdeligent Thank you for that input. It seems to be a big deal at some places, so it’s good to know it’s not as important at UF. Yes, since some schools received notifications Friday, we’re hopeful ours will at least be Monday.

@kdnmom, the research scholarship stacks with the Benacquisto. My son got both this past year.

Thank you, @oldandwise!

Is the scholarship tied to participation in the Research Scholars Program? And was it $2000 per year for 2 years or a total of $2000? Neither of those things are clear from the letter which states:
“In addition, you have been selected to participate in the UF Undergraduate Research Scholars
Program (http://cur.aa.ufl.edu/undergraduate-research-scholars-program) and awarded the Admissions Honors
scholarship of $2,000 over two consecutive years.” To add to it, the link doesn’t work…

It really isn’t a big deal at UF. A lot of student’s don’t apply to it, or they drop out after a year or two. They get involved with other activities (research, design teams, clubs, etc.) and decide not to continue in the program.

The honor’s program is design to help students get engaged with campus. It’s not about “smaller” classes. A year from now your son will be busy with other stuff and likely will not miss being out of honors.

@Gator88NE Ah! That’s good info. Many schools do talk about the smaller classes and early registration for honor students. I won’t worry about it, then. He’ll have no problem finding other things and groups he’s interested in. Thanks so much!

@kdnmom, congrats! My son also received the same letter and we’re thrilled. (also stunned that the link was broken!) We’re in South Florida and hopefully will hear some positive news today re: NMF. Good luck to all who are waiting!

Really, really hoping to hear something today here in Nebraska.

Son is home with the flu. Just going to have to wait for the official mail. Sigh.

Still nothing in mail for homeschooler in NC…

@feenicks This is the part I find most crazy. Why have the homeschoolers not heard yet? DId the NMSC change the way they notify? Are they not sending “principal” packages to homeschoolers until they mail the letters home to the Finalists? That would be an interesting change. Or perhaps the NMSC sent all the big envelopes via slow boat . . .

@Reebtoor I think homeschoolers still hear when principals do (we did for the semi-finalist round). I believe that there has only been 1 confirmation on this thread so far (principal told student). Maybe that principle just knew from past experience that if the student had not received a deny letter in January that he/she was in? I could be wrong but I do not believe that the principal packages have really shown up yet either. Again though, I could definitely be wrong

Reminder; Letters to Finalists’ homes will be mailed on February 11.

Because Letters to Finalist are sent to both school and home, school has option to notify finalist.
Semi-finalist Letter was sent only to school and obligated to notify students in timely matter.

I know for sure our school will not notify anyone. We are in SW, I’m guessing letter will arrive in next two days.

Good Luck to Everyone.

Received homeschool principal letter and certificate today in TX.

We also received homeschool principal letter today in NC (Informed Delivery fail :). Congrats everyone!

@bctnln1059 and @feenicks, Thank you for the updates! Can you confirm that they were postmarked 2/4?

My son said no word at his school today (TN). When they got the NMSF letter in the fall, they called all the kids into the office to tell them, so I’m assuming they will do that again when they receive the finalist notification.

The letter was dated 2/4 but there is no date on the envelope (it’s “presorted first class”). Mine didn’t appear in my Informed Delivery, either.
