Update for my house…called NM and they told us my D is a finalist, since school doesn’t advise and our mailbox may not be fixed for a long time! Yeah. Congrats. And NOW I can actually feel happy because I was feeling guilty for Ggroup and trying not to celebrate loudly, but now we can because…:

Ggroup…I’m SO happy for you! Congrats to your son - that’s an amazing story.

My guidance counselor (who hasn’t been particularly helpful throughout all this) had the letter from the NMSC sitting in a stack of junk mail. I was getting too anxious so I went in with my school’s other NMSF and asked her. After looking around for a while, she found it; we are both Finalists.

Congrats to everyone else receiving good news.

I finally had to march down to my S school and to talk to the GC. S has been getting emails from his early action schools that they need to know right away whether he’s moved on to finalist in order to be considered for merit scholarships. He made it!!!

I’m from Illinois and we got our letter today! But I couldn’t wait and called yesterday to confirm finalist status. Do call, they were very nice and it sure meant peace of mind.

I imagine that NMCorp is being very cooperative about telling people since they know that the weather is preventing the news from coming out in various areas of the country.

I just have to share the wonderful thing my daughter’s school did for their finalists yesterday. They called the finalists down to the counseler office and the counselers took them to a lecture hall where every department head, all the principals, and many teachers were waiting and they all stood and gave the kids a standing ovation as they entered the room. They will also be holding a congratulatory brunch next Monday with the school board and for the press. How cool is that?

How nice of them! Ditto skywalker though- Coming from a school that simply publishes the names somewhere on a 2-page weekly bulletin, I would feel awkward.

I think it’s nice when a school makes a big deal about NMFs and all academic achievements. It elevates academic achievement.

Most schools have banners on gym walls and big trophies in cases for athletic achievements and championships, why shouldn’t they be proud of their students’ academic successes as well!

I think it’s nice when a school makes a big deal about NMFs and all academic achievements. It elevates academic achievement.

I agree. The public school where our S attends is very good about this. Every academic achievement (NMSF, NMF, AMC12, MathIsCool, Science Bowl etc.) is recognized during school assembly. They are treated like heroes just like the athletes. It has been a very positive experience for all. This year we have 17 NMFs - highest in the state for public schools.

And at my kids’ school, whenever any senior gets a scholarship award for college, the principal announces it at the next assembly…lots of oohs and ahs…

So the NM letter said you can only get a college-sponsored NM scholarship if you haven’t been offered any other NM scholarship. They don’t mean that if they offer you the $2500, then you can’t get a college sponsored scholarship, right?
