national merit finalist with a low gpa?

appeal worked here also! dd's counselor got letter today and called to tell me at home.

Now I feel stupid for not appealing.

It really worked? Just a letter from the counselor? Because I know my counselor would vouch for me since she didn't get the chance to the first time, she knows much more about what I've accomplished throughout high school and the circumstances. Eh, maybe I'll ask her tomorrow.

I sent a letter also, detailing the circumstances around the grades they were questioning (how challenging the classes were, hard teachers,etc)...pointing out that they occurred in one quarter followed by two higher quarters and counselor also included dd's first semester senior grades...all A's, including an AP class...refuting their claim of an "academic downslide".

Congratulations ddd928. Your daughter worked hard and you showed wonderful follow through.

Zakface - it is definitely worth the effort. The worst that can happen is they say no, but getting that designation could mean some money.

I got in.

FYI, the "four B- grades and below" rule isn't true, 'cause that's how many I have...
UW GPA is 3.4ish, and I've had a downward trend (except for senior year, but they don't ask for senior-year grades to be sent, do they?).
And the SAT score I sent is a little over 2000, taken right before I took the PSAT if that makes any difference. My newer SAT score matches my PSAT score (which was at the cutoff), but I didn't send that one to NMSC since I was told my older score was fine.

I listed ECs that I've stuck to for 3-4 years and one new one. My essay was decent; I didn't list a sponsor college as my first choice; dunno how my rec letter went. Wasn't too close to that teacher, but I asked the admin I knew best. um. I had a couple of small local art contest awards from freshman year.

So this is really making me wonder why some people with seemingly better stats were rejected. It looks like GPA isn't counting as much.

I ask again, what classes were all of you students taking in high school? That has to make some kind of difference. And did some of you have no community involvement whatever, while others had a lot? That makes a difference too, I'm sure.

I've been part of a service club at school since freshman year.
I had one AP class and one weighted honors class for each of sophomore and junior years (total two APs, two honors) . This year, I have four APs (three first semester). But does NMSC know/consider your senior year workload? I don't remember.

^^^ NMSC knows and considers senior courseload; courseload needs to continue to be rigorous. Mid-year grades are not sent.

same problem. I have a uw 4.00, tookt the sat and got a 2080 (not great, but would qualify for MS) and got a 201 this year. dont know if i made or not, but a lot of people not as smart as me got it for sure.

I feel like a wizard. :D

I have a nice PSAT (234, I walked in not even knowing it was PSAT day ^^) and I’m expecting a high 2200 or 2300 on my November SAT (tomorrow o_o) given my performance on the practice tests… I also wrote a killer essay, and I have decent EC’s (ridiculous amount of hours before high school, at least 80+ during high school).

HOWEVER.

I have a 3.5 weighted GPA, I have a grand total of two AP classes, my frosh year sucked, and the economy has tanked. =(

Think I’ll qualify?

Oh, the dilemmas of a high school senior… facedesk

I’m interested to know some of your results. Forgive me for reviving a dead thread, but I appear to be in many of your situations 2 years later (216 PSAT NM Semifinalist, yet I have 6 Cs, a D, and a 3.2/4.0 UW/W gpa), and, what’re ya gonna do, I’m a hyperventilating High school senior. :D
