National Merit PSAT Cutoff Scores

When will this year's semi-finalist qualifying cutoff scores for New York be announced?

Also maybe people want to use this thread to post the cutoffs for each state as these become known.

First, have you gotten your scores back yet? I haven't in Wisconsin. Second, I thought the cutoff wasn't announced until next fall.

When you receive your score, depending whether you see an asterik next to the selection index, you know whether you made the cutoff.

monydad, have you seen this. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=59804&highlight=offs

My guess is not much different.

I didn't see that thread from this past May, but I can't see that anybody actually answered the poster's question. Which was the same question, for then, as mine is for now. Additionally, my particular interest is just New York.

The one useful prior link was to the Carleton site, which says that the high-scorers are identified in early summer. Seems like a long lag time, given that the PSAT test results are available now.

Well Monydad, you asked started this thread a long time ago. Was jrpar correct?

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=74403&highlight=cutoffs+announced

As of july of this year they still hadn't announced 2004 cutoffs. It does seem like a long time.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=82639&highlight=cutoffs+announced

Just looked at the report, per gxing's suggestion.

It says

"If your selection index places you among the 55,000 high scorers who qualify for program recognition, you will be notified next September."

On the back, it says that an asterisk next to your Selection Index score means that you do NOT meet requirements to enter NMSC competitions for awards to be offered in 2007.

I forgot about that old thread, which was intended to be about commended students, not semifinalists. I now want to know the semifinalist cutoffs for NY on the current exam, which is a different question. It appears that jpar did answer at that time anyway, and based on what I just read that appears to be correct information.

I wonder why it takes so long?

I take it your daughter is close? If so, she did a great job, either way.

I'm not expecting any change in notification procedures for this year's tests ccompared to last year's. Have you heard anything that makes you think people will be notified earlier?

As close as one can get, based on recent years.

I haven't heard anything, she just got her scores and I knew it was very close, so I, and she, was wondering when it would be resolved. I didn't remember the timing issues at all.

I don't blame you for wanting to know.
Good luck.

Monydad, I think the timing is still the same. Check out the NMSC site - www.nationalmerit.org - there's a timetable there.

Next May, the top 55,000 high scorers for this most recent test will receive a letter asking you to name two colleges to be notified of your interest/high score (so at this point you know you are AT LEAST commended), then in "early September" semi-finalists are notified. Finalists aren't notified until the spring (at least I understand THIS time gap since they have to review the applications, essays, etc).

I have no idea why it takes so long to announce the cutoffs for commended and semifinalist, since they have the data in hand now! The whole National Merit system seems needlessly mysterious.

Good luck to your daughter!

if there is NOT an asterisk next to the selection index score does that actually mean you are at least commended or does it just mean you are eligible (i.e. you're a junior instead of a soph)?

It just means you're eligible.

Almost there. NMSC just mailed Semifinalist notifications for the 2007 National Merit Program (current high school seniors who took the PSAT in 2005) to school principals. For links to the official schedule, and unofficial state cutoffs from the past few years, see thread
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=74297
The links are in post #202.

Semifinalist notifications were mailed to school principals Monday 8/21/06, the press release is Wednesday 9/13/06, and Commended notifications are mailed Monday 9/18/06.

Thanks for passing this info... we are waiting to hear CA cutoffs for 2007. Our school hasn't called or notified anyone yet.
