WashU offers money to National Merit Scholarship Finalists, but I can't find anything on their website that mentions a deadline. Does anyone know if WashU has one that is earlier than the May 31st deadline imposed by NMSC? Does WashU offer money to all NMS finalists are is it a limited number based on first come first served? Is there any advantage or disadvantage in the admission process, scholarship process, and/or financial aid process to name them as a first choice by NMSC's 1st round date of March 1st? Is there any advantage or disadvantage in informing WashU that a student is an NMS finalist if they haven't listed WashU as a first choice?

I have no idea. I am a National Merit Finalist and a National Hispanic Scholar, and the other universities I have applied to do not require NHS students to notify them; the scholarships are automatic. I've scoured the internet trying to find this information, but nothing has come up... I think I will call them tomorrow and find out.

D was a NMF in 2007. At that time WUSTl offered to match the $2,500 you received if you were selected for one of those scholarships by the NMSC for the following 3 years. Otherwise, they gave $2,000 per year to all NMFs. The deadline was the same date at NMSC's final date. D did not name them as her first choice in NMSC's first round and was admitted. D informed all the schools she applied to when her NMSF status became NMF, along with some other honors, etc. in a short letter.

I would check with the school regarding whether the NMF money is still automatic. These are much different economic times for all schools.

Our experience was same as MidwestParent's. After S was admitted, he changed his first choice to Wash U and everything was pretty automatic from there. The amazing part is that they did NOT reduce the aid award for the $2K. Pretty cool.

I just spoke with an admissions counselor. He told me that they award $2,000 annually if you indicate that WashU is your first choice by their deadline, which is in late May. If the NMSC awards you $2,500 then they will match that for the next three years. Unfortunately, they do not award anything to National Hispanic Scholars..
