National student Leadership Conference?

Is this any good? Is it like LeadAmerica which is essentially for rich people to show they have a lot of money?

someone on this forum told me it was a scam. sounds like it too. I get their invites every year.

its nothing special. colleges only see it as you being naive and your mommy and daddy having a lot of money.

my friend got a letter from them.

he has a 2.1 UW GPA tho...

lol really? cause i went to it

A lot of people at school got one, me included. My GC said if it asks for money, it's pretty much a scam. Yes, you might do stuff there, but it isn't really worth anything to go.

I didn't do NYLC, but I did do GYLC (Global YLC), and it was one of the best experiences of my life. Granted, mine involved going to Europe...but honestly, I could have been anywhere and still enjoyed myself. I'm not as up on politics/world issues as I should be, and I definitely learned a lot, because my groupmates (22 to a group...~400 people at my conference, 50% U.S. and 50% all other countries) brought varying POVs to the conference, and every day we attended a different presentation -- we spoke with Czech journalists, the OPEC PR woman, Jeremy Gilley from the organization Peace One Day.... All that said, my favorite part was making new friends -- I now chat daily with people from Spain, Egypt, South Africa, Barbados, Mexico, Canada, Bahrain, etc. etc., and I've gotten invitations to visit all of them :p Yeah, it costs a lot, but IMO it is completely worth it.

I hope that this helps, since I can't really speak for NYLC, but the impression I got from three of my friends who did it in '06 was that they loved it. I wrote an article about their experiences for my school paper last May -- if you'd like, I could post/PM it to give you a better idea of what an NYLC trip entails.

I can understand if it is a fun trip and a great learning experience, but it isn;t something worth noting on you transcript because you didnt "earn" the conference since everyone gets it. Something more worthwhile would be say, national debate conference

No! NSLC bad! Not if you want to actually learn something. It's good if you want to hang out with some of the coolest college kids in the country (our TAs kicked so much tuchis), but I was completely bored during lectures and simulations. A week or so ago I wrote something more indepth on my experiences at NSLC ID 2005. If you have the luxury to spend 2K on what is essentially a social gathering, go ahead. But have other plans.

When I was in DC as a Congressional page, there were always these NYLC kids walking around. I remember we talked to some of the kids once. They seemed nice enough, but yeah, they weren't quite as qualified as us pages! I remember Colin Powell talked to them, and I was on the Floor at that time. Go just for the experience, not to put on your application or anything.

too late i put it on my applications :(

don't fret.

Though its probably not very prestigious, colleges will appreciate your interest in politics by writing that down.

It's fine to put on your applications. It is an EC that shows that you are willing to go on an academically-related trip with a bunch of strangers. Of course, it also shows that you probably come from a family that is relatively well off. :)

NSLC won't tip you into a highly competitive college like Harvard, but it might qualify you for merit aid or special programs at lesser ranked colleges. It also could expand your general perspective and knowledge.

Worth going into debt for? Nope, but if you are interested and can afford it, why not?

Just to clarify I'm pretty sure NSLC isn't the same as NYLC. I got stuff from them last year and noticed the difference between the two. Butttt...

I went to NYLC (summer session, July 16-26, 2005) after my sophmore year, and it was the best experience of my life, literally. And if you say it's just for rich people, then you haven't gone to one of these things because a lot of them were there because of fundraising or sponsoring. I love government, so it was a great opprotunity and it was great to get the handson experience.

Last summer I went to GYLC which was also amazing, great talks on genocide and crosscultural communication. It was also a great opprotunity to meet people from all over the world and get a new perspective on life and the world.

Personally, I'm not for padding my applications. I think colleges want to see who you are, if that means going to a political or leadership camp, then do it. Don't jsut do something so it looks good on your resume, because they can see through superficiality.

I haven't heard of anyone who hasn't had an amazing experience with CYLC (the parent organization that includes NYLC and GYLC) and I've talked to many people and been a constant on the message boards (until recently). I'd definitely say it's the organization to go with. I also went to Presidential Classroom this past summer and while it may carry more prestige, I felt it wasn't as well-organized or well put on.

So look into it, if you are interested in meeting amazing people and having the time of your life and learning about our government/the world at the same it, NYLC/GLYC is the place to be.

LifeUnfolding: glad to see someone else sticking up for the program :p I'm curious -- did you do GYLC Europe last summer?

bad and overall waste of money all together. I went to business. Basically fun place for the rich who can dump 2500 dollars on a program. 90% of the people basically were way more interested in "omg dance party. omg hot girl" than actually learning anything. And errr...undergraduate students are the teachers. Of course, some people are actually there for learning and they can be pretty chill and amazingly smart.

I got one with 4.0 GPA and so did another girl with a 2.0 GPA
- that explains that they just kind of send it hoping people will go to it
WASTE OF MONEY!

No, I went to DC/NYC on June 11-22, I meant to put that there. Too many thoughts were going through my head lol.

Did you guys that had a bad experience go with CYLC under one of their programs? or NSLC? Just curious.

I haven't heard anything about their law one yet.

Oh, jsut found out they are different, which would explain the difference in experience.

www.cylc.org is the one zutsuit and I went to. If you want something worthwhile, check out NYLC and GYLC. The one thing is you have to be nominated by someone. It is definitely worth it. I suggest going during the summer to learn the most/have the best time. The fall/spring sessions are too short.
