National Youth Leadership Conference

Is this a scam or actually a prestigious conference? Because I received an invitation last year and maybe one the year prior to that as well...or maybe it was something else that I'm thinking of. Anyways, at the time, I thought it was just to get money and I didn't have that much money to spend freely on a vacation in D.C., but my mom said she read about a person who went to it and was noted in the newspaper.

It's a real program, a friend of mine went, and he really enjoyed it. That particular one was on homeland security, I believe. I personally went to the National Student Leadership Conference (US Policy and Politics 1st Session) last summer, and this program was absolutely outstanding. For 11 days, we did all sorts of things with the program, from leadership training to senate simulations to a full presidential election throughout the course of the program, with media, interest groups, political parties, etc. And, the entire conference (not just politics) voted. I highly recommend NSLC; NYLC can't be that different.

I went to NYLC last April! It's a very expensive conference to go to, but totally worthwhile. The people that you meet are so incredible and diverse--the best and brightest from across the country. Even though it's been a good eight months since I went to NYLC, two of my closest friends today are ones that I made at that conference. As to your question about prestige, I put it on my college app. as an honor. In the end, leadership conferences like NYLC, NSLC, etc. don't really having any bearing in the college process, but could never hurt.

Go to NYLC if you can! I can't emphasize how awesome an experience it is, especially if you're interested in politics since the conference has you doing so many difference government simulations, has you going to Capitol Hill to meet your congressmen, and listening to a variety of speakers.

thanks everyone for the input! National Student Leadership Conference...sounds familiar or I'm just mixing it up with NYLC. Did you get an invitation for that in the mail too?

National Student Leadership Conference and National YOUTH Leadership Conference are two different programs. Both have their strengths and weaknesses from what I can tell. Students who have attended both from this area felt they were worthwhile, but they are expensive.

I got invitations to both, but since my parents had already paid the $1000+ for me to go to NYLC, they didn't want to spend anymore money and pay for a second program for leadership's sake. The difference is this -- NYLC has only political programs whereas NSLC has programs relating to politics, music, art, leadership, medicine, etc. and you can choose which one you want to attend. Both programs are supposed to be great, although I can only vouch for NYLC since that was what I attended.

It sure as hell had better be awesome for the money you put down ;) I don't know about the "best and the brightest" aspect of it, either, because I KNOW some of the people at my school who were "invited."

One funny story about NSLC - My sister took the PSAT and misspelled her last name on the score-sheet. Well, a few months later, we get a letter from NSLC - addressed to the misspelled name - saying how she had been "nominated by her teachers" and what an honor it was. Give me a break....!

LOL!

Just a bit off-topic, but why is this in financial aid forum? =D

How can I get information on the National Student Leadership Conference? When does this take place. Someone mentioned that there were programs for a variety of things. I did a Google search and came up with a minimum of info. Any suggestions?
