I got a letter in the mail yesterday telling me that I was nominated for this program. Has anyone participated in this program before? I'd love to hear your thoughts, opinions, experiences, etc.

You and probably most of the people on CC :-). I’ve heard it is a good program, but not prestigious. If you have the money and nothing else to do, it’s good to do. There isn’t a lot of hands on… it’s mostly presentation, but that does vary from location to location. It won’t really give you much to add to your college app.

I’m pretty sure my Honors Physiology teacher recommended anyone who wrote his or her name down on a list. I asked my teacher about it, and she said it’s good for people “serious about becoming a doctor.” I’m reluctant to go because it seems somewhat like a waste of money and isn’t very prestigious, considering I’m applying to science internships as well.

My friend’s sister went a few years ago and wasn’t very impressed by it. Eh, if you have the money and nothing else to do…

I received the a letter from it too. And I was curious as well. My brother asked his counselor about it a couple years back and my counselor said it was just them making money … but it’s not that helpful is it?

Yeahhh I got it too. But I’m applying to other programs. I already got into one so I probably won’t go. I have a friend who went and she said it was fun, but she didn’t learn much. Go if you have money and nothing else to do, but don’t rely on it for something to add to a college app

I got one in the mail apparently on the 14th (i say apparently because I found it in the pile of letters earlier today, the 19th).

I’ve gotten mail similar to these kind of programs lately; catalogs for summer by colleges across the COUNTRY -_- and leadership conventions, and etc.

In the beginning it was cool, but now it’s becoming rather annoying.
Do you have any ideas as to where these companies/organizations got my information?
I’m planning to unsubscribe, or delete all my information from wherever it is. :/

I went as a freshman, thinking it was a big deal - it really wasn’t. However, I was and am interested in biomedicine and it was a great introductory program that provided me with solid background information. I actually learned a lot about med school, how to prepare for it, and went to tons of hospitals/medical schools in the Philly area, got to see hospital morgues, examine cadavers, visit research hospitals, hear guest speakers, sit in on surgeries, etc. It’s a pricey camp, no doubt, and by no means it is prestigious or selective, but it gets you solid background. In other words, it won’t impress colleges (nor should you do a camp to impress colleges) but it will certainly satisfy your interests if you are in fact interested in medicine.

On a side note, if you’re worried about getting into a prestigious program later on in high school, don’t worry about it. I went to NYLF MED in 9th grade, completely blew off science in 10th grade and instead did summer programs for my school extracurriculars, came back and focused on school/studies/APs/independent reading and got into a very selective science program whose alumni end up matriculating to HYPSM, Caltech, Columbia, Penn, Cornell, etc. (Somewhere like 60/85 to those schools). So don’t worry about summer program prestige if you’re still a freshman or sophomore.
