I’m so confuSed about the NYLFM. Do I need to have been nominated in order to go or can I just pay the amount and go? Please help!

Hello all: my daughter (10th grader) received an invite to NYLF (medicine) for this summer (2011). I’ve been doing a lot of research and am finding opinions that range from “it’s great” to “don’t bother” and I’m thorougly confused.

I would really like to hear from a parent of a student who has attended one of these or a student individually, about the experience itself.

As a single mom, I don’t have the $350 deposit to enroll her, let alone the $2600 for the entire tuition so before I go selling my blood and organs, I’d like to know what we’re getting into. :)

Thanks!!

NYLF

Don’t bother with it Southern Mom. I remember I used to cry inside myself every time I got one of these offers (or offers from the CTY program) in the mail. My parents would always refuse to fork over the money needed to send me. I would see my friends going to the programs and wish that I could go, desperately so.

But in the end, it didn’t matter. Not going to these programs didn’t stop me from getting into good colleges.

What I am saying is: these summer programs aren’t that important in the context of college admissions. Your daughter would gain more from a local university course, a job or an internship.

Good Luck!! :)
