Natural sciences transfer requirement

For any transfers out there, do you know what exactly "natural sciences" means? I mean, I know it's science courses, but I'll explain further below.

In order to transfer to UNCCH it says we need "six hours in the natural sciences".

So far, I've taken Astronomy, which based on the transfer equivalency chart (<a href="https://www.unc.edu/sis/adm/xfereq.html%5B/url%5D">https://www.unc.edu/sis/adm/xfereq.html</a>), it is transferable.

Basically, I need to take one more science class, but I'm not sure if it needs to be a science class with a lab? Or could it just be any science class?

Okay so I just found this link:

[About Us — UNC Advising](http://advising.unc.edu/AboutUs)

“NATURAL SCIENCES and MATHEMATICS
Applied and Materials Sciences, Biology, Biostatistics, Chemistry, Clinical and Laboratory Science, Computer Science, Dental Hygiene, Ecology, Environmental Health Sciences, Environmental Science and Environmental Studies, Exercise & Sport Science, Geological Sciences, Health Policy and Administration, Marine Sciences, Mathematics, Mathematical Decision Sciences, Nursing, Nutrition, Pharmacy, Physics & Astronomy, Psychology, Public Health, Radiologic Science, Statistics and Operations Research.”

Would it be fair to say that UNC will accept any of those classes to fulfill the natural science class requirement?

Bump, anybody? I mean, based on the above, it appears that my classes would be considered social sciences (I took Psychology and Astronomy). But after reading around, it seems like schools generally don’t consider Psychology to be a natural science course. Just wanna make sure this isn’t an error on the part of UNC.

I called admissions, and the lady didn’t know, so she put me through to a number that was dead haha.

PSYC 101 counts for PL (Physical and Life Sciences)
ASTR 101 counts for PX (Physical and Life Sciences w/Lab)

Those are for UNC classes, so the biggest thing would be getting both classes to transfer for both credits. You might also not get the PX designation with your astronomy class unless you did have a lab involved (not sure if they’d give you PL for that or what). GL with getting your credits to transfer. Best case scenario is that you’d be done with your science requirements.

Thanks Artemis  I guess I’m just a bit confused because of the wording they use. They don’t mention “Physical and Life Sciences” anywhere on the transfer requirements. They state:

6 semester hours of acceptable college-level English, not including remedial courses
6 semester hours of acceptable college-level mathematics, not including remedial courses (college algebra is considered remedial at Carolina)
6 semester hours of acceptable college-level social sciences
6 semester hours of acceptable natural science
6 semester hours of a foreign language

So not sure if my two classes meet the requirements for natural sciences. Otherwise, I meet all the other requirements.

Let’s say come time for them to review my application, they determine my science courses don’t meet the natural science requirement. Would they automatically reject me? Or could they accept me, pending the completion of the required classes?

Have you been admitted yet? If you’re just applying, it probably won’t matter. Credit designation would come much later for transfers.

I have not been admitted yet. That’s reassuring. I guess the only part that is confusing me is that they have set requirements in order to be admitted (6 hours of math, 6 hours of natural sciences, 6 hours social sciences, etc…).

Sorry if I’m repeating my question haha. But what happens if at the time of reviewing my application, they determine I don’t have enough credits in a certain area (eg. natural sciences). Can they admit me pending completion of any courses I need?

They might. I doubt they’d revoke admissions based on a technicality. I’d see if you could include a one-sentence blurb saying something like “PSYC 101 and ASTR 101 are both classified as science courses at CURRENT COLLEGE, please contact me if any further information is necessary” if it’s really bothering you. Or just call back and see if you can speak to someone who specializes in transfer admissions. They probably just called it “natural sciences” to be purposefully vague and include more qualifying science courses at other universities.

Awesome  It’s actually not my current college that considers them natural sciences, it appears that UNC considers them natural sciences as per here

Spoke to them on the phone and they weren’t able to give me a definite answer. We’ll see how it goes.

Thanks for your help :)
