NCAA Men's soccer

do you know if they hold tryouts or is it done on a recruitment basis? I am a transfer student and haven't been in the soccer loop since high school because of $$ concerns(saved up working full time so couldn't play for my community college team, parents offered little or no help)

I've been googling but the only thing I can find try outs for are the Berkeley's rec soccer club
UC Berkeley Recreational Sports: Men's Soccer

the NCAA team's page doesn't offer any assistance. other than an email calsoccer@berkeley.edu

anyone have any info on this? would it be appropriate for me to e-mail them?

I have heard of instances from a club soccer player that exceptionally talented players on a club or rec team will from time to time get an offer to tryout for the NCAA squad. Because soccer is not a revenue sport and therefore is not flush with scholarships to offer like the revenue NCAA sports (football and men’s basketball), the tryout process for soccer will be more open than other sports. You could ask about trying to walk-on to the NCAA squad, although in the off-season it would be helpful to get started on a club team so that you could establish a playing pedigree to garner the attention of the NCAA squad. If you are not able to get onto the NCAA squad as a walk-on, playing club will allow you to remain competitive as a potential walk-on candidate if you want to try walking-on in the future.

emailing the coach would definitely be a good idea. I think I’ve read somewhere in the NCAA rules that teams have to hold a try-out but I’m not positive, I do know that coaches get emails all the time about walking on and most of them time strongly encourage it, because

A) its a free player for them - walk ons dont get scholarships obviously

B) if free recruiting for them if they do like you and want to offer you a scholarship for the next year

nearly all teams, even pac-10, welcome walk ons especially like the other poster said if its a team that doesnt do high scale recruiting

thanks for the info strykur and goldenbear, I appreciate the insight. that was about what I was hoping to hear as well!
