NCSSM Class of 2015 - Future Applicants

I have Discovery Day tomorrow. Do I need to dress up, or can I just wear jeans and a sweatshirt? While I’m here posting, I’ve been dying to know how I stand in the application pool and what my chances may be of getting in.
I’m from District 9 (I’ve heard it’s pretty competitive…)
GPA: 4.0 uw and 4.8ish w
In the IBMYP program
SAT Score: 2130 640 reading (Ugh… does this hurt me a lot?) 770 math and 720 writing
Classes (A’s in all):
Freshman Year:
Earth and Environmental Honors
World History Honors
English I Honors
Gym (Required)
Biology Honors
Algebra 2 Honors
Spanish II
Sports and Entertainment Marketing (Required to compete in DECA which I did this year)

Sophomore 1st Semester
Civics and Economics Honors
English II Honors
Spanish III Honors
Intro to Engineering Design Honors
Geometry Honors
Physics Honors
(In Chemistry Honors and Multimedia and Webpage Design (Did not sign up for this lol, it’s such a B.S. class) right now)

P.S. My school doesn’t offer AP’s to underclassman, but another guy at my school applying to NCSSM somehow managed to get one out of our GC, will this look like I’m not challenging myself?

Extracurriculars/ Service:
About 70 hours of miscellaneous service hours. I did start a classroom central school supply drive in my neighborhood which I ran and coordinated.
Varsity Cross Country, Varsity Track, and Varsity Tennis last year and Varsity Cross Country, Varsity Swimming, and Varsity Tennis this year. I was not in any clubs last year, but I am on Science Olympiad, DECA, founder and president of Chinese Club (learning on my own), and Student Government this year. I’m also an IB student ambassador.
Not too many awards, just like Duke TIP and a few other shallow awards.

Essays: Probably Average, procrastinated lol
Recommendations: Probably pretty good, although all of my teachers last year left lol, so I was restricted when choosing.

I think I’m most worried about being behind in math. Not many people in my school do it because it isn’t really an option, but 3 kids at my school are ahead, all of whom are applying to NCSSM. I was kind of reclusive when it came to speaking with my counselor last year, so I never asked about taking advanced classes. Anyways, no excuses, how do I stand from the opinions of fellow applicants? Lol good luck everyone! Only about a month until we find out…!

Forgot to mention rank: 4/470ish

Jacktilthend: It may have been good put more effort into your essays, because they really can do wonders to help people gloss over their weaknesses and stress their strengths. However, you do have a solid application grade/SAT wise, so I think you have a great chance :D

So what did everyone think of today’s Discovery Day?

It was pretty good, just made me more anxious

Sent from my SCH-I605 using CC

. . . where is everybody?

15 days left :o

I’m here! :D

Parent of applicant. After Discovery Day, my K was excited, but decided just not ready to leave home. Applied to Res. + Online. I think to ensure Online availability, K needs to withdraw Res. application (leaving Online only). Literature indicated if you get a Res. bid and turn it down, there is no guarantee of Online space. Best of luck to all who applied. I’d go there in a heartbeat–but I think it’s something the individual K needs to decide.

Skrunch…I would ask about the Res to online change before pulling the application. A lot of kids get cold feet. Granted, you don’t want to keep a spot from someone that fully wants to attend. But I would advise that you not let your K pull his application just yet. It would be horrible if 2 months from now he decided that he would have rather have done the residential piece and never will know whether he would have gotten in. If accepted, he will come to a Welcome Day in a few weeks and that might be the better time to make the choice.
That being said, you know your child…if he is sure that he does not want to do residential than you are right to end it now.

For the rest of you still waiting…HANG IN THERE. Results are sometime in early April, correct? Did they give you a date at Discovery Day?

Yeah, @Taben1112, counting the hours to April 8th at 4pm :stuck_out_tongue: Just under 13 days.

This has been the longest spring break ever… So how is everyone doing waiting for Monday?

AHHHHH SO EXCITED TO MEET YOU GUYS!!! Only 5 more days! If you have any questions, just feel free to ask me. I’ll be one of your seniors:)

Hi NCSSMco14Student! I hope I can get the chance to meet you.
Anyways, I don’t know if I’m the only one, but the realization that the results are coming so soon is starting to kick in. If I’m anxious now, I’ll probably be a nervous wreck next week. What’s better, knowing or not knowing? I’m actually second-guessing myself on whether or not I want to go. (yeah, side-effects of being nervous) Any advice?

@NCSSMco14Student
What was going through your mind when you had around a week left before the decisions? Were you nervous, scared, calm?

@Val3dictorian15
Ooh, that’s a pretty tough one. Haha, I know that I myself was a nervous wreck waiting for my decision to come out only a year ago. Haha I was actually at work after school when I found out I was accepted and I totally freaked out in front of everyone.
All I can say though is to just hope for the best and stay optimistic! At this point, you have done all you can do and just have to trust that you did your best and that really is what the admissions office is looking for. Good luck and just don’t let your nerves kill you!!

Too many action potentials :D

@yerhs52
Haha like I told val3dictorian15, I was actually totally freaking out the last week to be completely honest. I knew the decisions were scheduled to come out right during my shift for work so I had to get my mom to text it to me so I could find out right after I got off but right when I did it was greatest feeling of relief ever!!! That few hour shift was difficult though because I knew the results were already out and I didn’t know yet. I just had to refocus on my job and then when I found out it just meant even more.

Only 4 days left :T

I’m really nervous about the new CDs. I’m in CD 2(I think) now, the one that Wake County is in and I heard the competition in what used to be CD 4 was huge.

Will it still be as competitive since Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill got split into 3 different CDs o_O

What districts did Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill get split into?

I don’t know the numbers, but we should have received an email about the new CDs

[North Carolina 2011 Redistricting Maps](http://www.app.sboe.state.nc.us/webapps/redistrict/NCRedistrictMapSingle.html?2468608,,Congressional,2011)

I actually made a mistake. I was looking at Wake County, not Raleigh(since that’s where I hear the best schools are)

I think Chapel Hill is in the light blue one, Wake County is in the one that surrounds the light blue CD’s bottom half and Durham is in the gray one

EDIT: Just realized you can check the numbers, so
Chapel Hill is 4
The part with Wake County is 2
Durham is 1

well wake county is now split between cd 4, 2, and 13. cd 4 could still be pretty tough because it encompasses a good part of wake county and chapel hill.
