NCTE Award for writing

How prestigious is this?

Thx.

anyone????

Well, I happen to think it is a nice award, since my son got it.

I really don't have a feel for how it is viewed by colleges, though. Since my son is a computer science/math major, it looked nice on his applications at those schools that were interested in students with a wide range of interests and talents. At the really tech-oriented schools, I guess it didn't hurt, but I doubt it helped much.

I certainly would plan to list it among your awards on college applications.

The three students I know who won this award are very strong students, across the board. All are attending very good schools, but I assume this award is only one small part of a strong record.

Congratulations if you have been nominated or have been named a winner. It was considered a big enough deal here locally that the school board recognized the winners at one of their open meetings, and the school threw a small reception. I imagine the recognition is a very local matter, however, and depends a lot on whether the teacher-sponsor is energetic about getting the awardees the attention they deserve.

The NCTE is pretty prestigious. Just being nominated means you're either the best, or one of the very best, writers in your school as judged by the English/LA department. If you win, you're one of only about 600 winners in the country, which averages out to about 12 per state (more in the large and fewer in the small states, of course).

That's pretty elite company.
