I was nominated by my school for this award, but ... I think I'm going to have to write another essay or something. What are some common prompts / what kind of prompts do they give, anyway?
is the award any good?
thank you

If I remember correctly, there are two parts to the competition.

One is an on-site, timed session in which you compose response(s) to prompts. You type at a computer and submit at that point. A teacher or counselor is supposed to be present as a proctor.

The other part is a collection of your writings (poems, essays, movie reviews, anything I think) that have been done previously. You are supposed to put together a packet of about 10 pages.

My son was a winner of this award. I don't know what the prompts were.

The award is a nice addition to your college applications. There is no money involved. My son happens to be a computer science/math student so I don't know how much it counted for him, but I'm sure it didn't hurt.

Results are not known until September or October of the following year. It should be in time for your college applications.

And congratulations, by the way! Have fun with the competition. It doesn't involve that much work, and awards are always nice to have.

There are some examples of the impromptu prompts on the site: Achievement Awards in Writing Past Topics

They seem easy enough.

I'm excited. :]

Congratulations to you, too, Poseur.

OK, I checked the link and now I'm wondering what my son wrote.

If you did it because you were nominated, but didn't win an award, but still participate, should you include under awards on app

ew, they seem so corny to me. lol

^ agreed. My timed essay was kind of terrible...expected more creative prompts...

yeah, not only are they not creative, but they sort of limit you to portraying a positive view of society.... you could argue the negative side but it is less geared towards that, imho
