NEC or Berklee hotel suggestions

Hello, moving freshman S into NEC at end of August, and wondering if some experienced parents could comment on Back Bay area hotels they have liked or would avoid.

We've previously stayed at the Hilton Back Bay, liked it, it's pricey (>$200 per night). Also stayed at the Sheraton next door, same price, didn't like as much (gargantuan, impersonal). Hilton is booked this time.

Anybody ever stay at Midtown Hotel, down the street from NEC? Very reasonable price, but looks a little scary on Google streetview.

How about Eliot Hotel, pricey little 'boutique' hotel on corner of Mass ave and Commonwealth? Looks fab on website, but I'm leary of boutiques, having been burned before.

How about Hotel 140?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

You can walk to both from the Copley Place hotels–there are both a Westin and a Marriott.

The Gryphen House. It’s a very cute bed and breakfast. It was down the street from BoCo and I was able to walk to my audition at NEC.

If you like boutique type hotels, but one with lineage and elegance and a more traditional supply of amenities, I’d recommend the Lenox in Copley Square. If you phone and ask for an NEC rate, they will oblige (actually, I think most of the hotels in the area will do this). Room service is extremely pricey, tho’, but the experience of old world luxury is very relaxing and enjoyable (and the price we were able to negotiate was less than the Hilton).

Farther off is the Newberry St. Guest House–a b&b with lots of charm and a great location on Newberry St., still walking distance to NEC.

I’d actually recommend the Midtown. It’s pleasant, reasonably priced, and extremely convenient. The neighborhood has some superficial remnants of the roughness of years past, and certainly one should be on guard late at night, but it is really very safe.

You can also look into the John Jeffries House. It is a bed and breakfast over near Mass General (near Charles Street). It is not as close to NEC, but it is right next to the T station. They have parking lot as well for their patrons which is nice if you are driving. Prices are reasonable and accommodations are quite nice.

Elliot is real nice and very close. If you have a car you can also go across the river to Cambridge or stay outside of town. If you have to stay near the schools you are looking at $159+

And all the hotels will also hit you with a $35 parking charge per day.

If you have a car, I would highly recommend the Staybridge Suites in Burlington. $80/night for a 1 bedroom suite. Kitchen. Free breakfast. Free parking.

There is also the Burlington Marriot and the Bedford Glenn Double tree for $99 - $119. You are looking at about 20 minutes without traffic.

I too would recommend the Midtown Hotel. My boy and I stayed there when visiting NEC, BU, Berklee, and others. A short walk from NEC and Berklee. A cafe within 2 mins walk for breakfast, or walk another 2 mins to Prudential Centre. Rooms clean and spacious. And a good rate, even cheaper if you book direct.

I LOVE the Eliot. It’s our new hotel in Boston. Charming and priced lower than the big impersonal ones. You can walk to NEC–
