Need a serious comments needed for Transfer

Hello, my colleagues

For almost three months I have been thinking about the perfect institiution that I can make it as a transfer student.

Before one gives me a feedback about my thoughts, I will give a bit of reason that I wanted to transfer.

I am in my sophomore year in George Mason University (fairfax, VA). I lived in Fairfax, VA area for 10 years and I am going to school that I most hated. The most reason that I decide to go to GMU is due to SAT problem that I went through during highschool year.
I got 1540 In march test and improved more than 500 points in a year so I was not able to get my score (december test) But I had 800 for subject test Math Level 1 and 2, and over 700 in biology and chemistry. Also GMU offered full scholar.

I had 3.55 GPA from Highschool and have taken couple IB and AP classes.
Resonable amount of volunteer hours and couple activities like normal student does.

Now I have 46 credits (just ended my fall semester) and having 3.98 GPA (two A-)
Before end of sophomore year, I am done with 2 semesters of Organic chemistry + labs, General chemisty + labs, General biology + lab, Microbiology + lab, 2 semester of physics + lab and some other general courses.
(Major in Chemistry, Minor in Biology) or might change to bio-chem

I am planning to transfer to
Columbia university, NYC
Cornell, NY
JHU, MD
NYU, NYC
U of Michigan, (instead of UVA because if I go to UVA, I can imagine my self living in VA forever)

Backup of George Washington University

I am very worried about the reputation of GMU (since it is a unknown college)

So am I setting up my goal too high? Should I lower the range of list?

GMU is not an “unknown”. Do not worry about that. Do worry about how you are going to pay for these places if you do get in.

It looks like English is not your first language. Find out if you need to take the TOEFL.

What was your new SAT score? It’s still important for most of these schools.

Why are you transferring? GM is -not- an unknown university. It’s a very well-known university and well-respected. It looks like you’re possibly pre-med? If you’re worried about acceptance at a med school, a 3.98 at GM won’t rule you out anywhere. Seriously. And doing your undergrad in VA doesn’t mean you’ll live there forever, especially if you’re planning on grad school.

If you’re transferring because you’re unhappy at GM – you haven’t made friends, for instance, or you just want to get out of Fairfax – then, fine. But don’t transfer for the wrong reasons.

hapymomof1: money is not a problem in this case. English is not my first lang so I usually spend time revising, but i was too tired to revise. Btw I dont need Toefl score. So what you think about transfer acceptance? Wanted explanation or recomen.

waverly: I am planning to take jan sat. But the colleges do not require sat except columbia. so what do you think about acceptance?

valereee: eager to get out of town to experience new people. Planning for medical school or phd chem to become chem profess or researcher. Is there a chance.that I can get in?

With that GPA, you should be competitive for all of the schools you’re trying to transfer to. GW, NYU and Michigan should all be pretty easy for you, there shouldn’t be any problems there. NYU and Michigan are both very transfer friendly schools and accept lots of transfers every year. JHU, Cornell and Columbia will all be more difficult because of their low acceptance rates. Without knowing how good your ECs, recs and essays are, it’s difficult to actually chance you at those schools, simply because they are so ultracompetitive. However, you will definitely be competitive. I think your list is fine just the way it is.

First off, make sure that you revise your essays very carefully. English isn’t my first language either, but that isn’t a good enough reason to not write well (especially if you’re exempt from TOEFL). Your classes seem to all be science based, and that doesn’t really demonstrate the level of English you are competitive at. At the schools you want to transfer to (especially Columbia), you will have to take a few humanities classes, and those classes require a lot of writing.

Secondly, I think your reason for wanting to transfer is quite poor. GMU is a great school, and it is very well known. Your reason for wanting to transfer to the aforementioned schools is because you want to go to a top notch school, which is understandable, but shouldn’t be the ONLY reason. A 3.98 at GMU is very impressive, and you’d be giving that up. Think about that before you decide to transfer. You are not guaranteed a 3.98 at any of those schools. I can tell you that it’ll probably be more difficult because, as a transfer, you have more than just academics to worry about (i.e. social life).

Are you competitive at the schools you mentioned? Of course.
Do I think you should be transferring? That’s your decision, but in my honest opinion, I simply don’t think it’s worth the hassle.

Anyway, sorry if I seemed harsh.

Good luck.

I think Cornell, if it’s A & S, also requires SAT scores for transfers. For these schools I think you’ll need an appropriate score.

I really don’t know what JHU and UM want from transfers.

I’d say the ivies might be a little tough, as they are almost always a crap shoot. But the others I’d say you are locked in at. Check out Vanderbilt, rice and emory as well!

Sorry, are you asking whether you can get into medical school or a graduate chem program from George Mason? Absolutely. My best friend went to Olivet Nazarene for undergrad, got terrific grades there, and got into a good med school.

anthonyxy21: thanks for the comment. I guess the ives are the reach schools bases on my stats. I hace decided not to apply columbia. Hope Nyu and U mich accept application

itransferred11: I really appreciates your personal thought about my plan. I have taken couple social classes as elective and eng 101. Also the reason that I wanted to transfer is to have some more challenge. I spent less time studying in college compare to my HS studying. I am not afraid of droppinh my grades. I was prepraring my self to have harsh[seriously like my mom] comments.

waverly: I visited cornell during my ski trip to Vermont. They dont require SAT score since you started your colleg ecourse.

nyutransfer1314: I love winter sports since one noticed.that all my.schools are in upper states. Can you recommend other upper state colleges.that were like NYU or u Mich?

valereee: I have personal experience that who had hard time applying to med school. I am not saying
gmu is bad school but not enough for me.
