Need Advice about Predicament

Salutations,

I want to apply to mathematics/economics at UCLA. However, I just learned that I cannot complete 2/3 prerequisites for the program.

Here they are:
(MATH 61) Introduction to Discrete Structures
(COMPTNG 10A) Introduction to Programming (C++)
(ECON 11) Microeconomic Theory

Everything else is/will be done by spring. The UCLA advisor told me the c++ class at my school is not rigorous enough; she also said that this class is the most potent! I could take C++ at another local college. However no college within driving distance has microeconomic theory, and Intro. Disc. Struct. is composed of two classes at this alt. local college.

What should I do? Should I still apply to this major given that I probably will not complete 2/3 prereq? Will this make me uncompetitive and reduce my chances? If so, I guess I could apply strictly to their economics program; I feel I am extremely competitive to that major but I would rather get the joint for various reasons...

This is a big bummer :( Anyone else experiencing this dilemma or something similar? I have all the prereq. for econ done...I guess I could apply there if I am doomed?

Thanks

Not sure about the math courses , but I think nearly everyone takes ECON 11 and 41 at UCLA.

I remember hearing that one CC had an equivalent ECON 41 course , but that is one out of 30+ CCs , so I wouldn’t worry about that at all.

edit:

Econ is more competitive than Math/Econ , so I think you would have a better shot at the joint major , even if you miss one pre-req.

Also , I’m not sure what school you attend but check with assist.org , and if the C++ course shows up as transferable (& equivalent) , then it is.

I think I would have a competitive chance at the economics program. But I do not want to do it lol. I have all the prereq. except those three…

I probably will apply with 2 or 3 prereq missing… I just do not know if it is better to apply for economics and have a better shot because I got good stats and all prereq. done or get flat out denied for math/economics because of prereqs…

Thanks

Math/Econ is going to be a lot more competitive this year. Don’t expect anywhere near 75% acceptance rate. It will still be high, though. (My guess is around 50% like the other math majors). What is your GPA?

(MATH 61) Introduction to Discrete Structures

  • This class is offered at few CCC’s. Don’t worry about it.
(COMPTNG 10A) Introduction to Programming (C++)
  • You are at a disadvantage because a lot of people take this class and have it at their CCCs.
    (ECON 11) Microeconomic Theory
  • This class must be taken at UCLA

I emailed UCLA because I will be missing Econ 11 and Math 61. Here’s what they said:

Make sure you really like math because you can’t switch to econ when you get in. You still have a pretty good chance without comp sci but it depends on your GPA. Good luck.

so really, you are only missing two pre-reqs since ECON11 is suppose to be taken at UCLA.

I think you have a really good shot if you complete that C++ course. Take the C++ course at another school over the Winter , and assuming you only take that one course , you might as well drive a bit farther than you would like. I mean, you reallllly need this class.

Good luck man.

I will try to take C++ at another college! My gpa is 3.87. I like math but I like economics more. However, I heard that economics alone does not prepare one enough for finance/graduate economics. Plus, I really want a solid quant background.

Thanks Again!
