need an honest opinion, what are my chances at nyu?

nyu is my ultimate dream school. i have done extensive research on the school and feel that i am an excellent candidate. however, because my heart is set on it so dearly i would really like to hear an outside opinion that isn't my parent's or my friend's. i am really relying on my activities and essay because i feel that they are what really set me apart from other applicants. my academics are above average, but i wouldn't say outstanding. i applied to CAS as an undecided major. here's a breakdown:

my grades have consistently improved throughout high school. i had a lot of problems in 9th grade and was sent to boarding school where i earned Bs and Cs. 10th i improved with all As and Bs and my junior year i got all As and 1 B in both honors and AP classes. it is also important to note that my first boarding school did not offer honors or AP courses and lacked a foreign language department, and i included this information in my application. i am currently taking honors and AP classes. my gpa is about a 3.7 and i have been part of the national honor society since junior year.

my SAT scores are average, but that is because i really do not do well on standardized tests (the whole sitting for 3 hours, attention span etc.) and my best section is writing, which doesn't even count. my scores are as follows in critical reading/math/writing/essay

660/520/650/8
650/520/710/12
650/570/650/8

now on to my activities. i have been involved with volunteer work for more than 3 years ranging from volunteering at pet shelters to working with students on conflict resolution. i am part of my high school's schools for schools club which fundraises for the invisible children in uganda, and i have made many donations on my own time as this is something i am really passionate about. i have traveled abroad on student trips to both costa rica, where i stayed for 5 weeks and lived with a tico family, and france and england as a student ambassador. my other activities include french club, yearbook committee and working as a columnist for the school newspaper. i have held a steady p/t job throughout high school, and even worked 2 p/t jobs at one point during my senior year.

please share your thoughts! this is really the most important part of my life so far, i will be utterly heartbroken if i am not accepted. also... i do not know if this is important, but my dad is the vice president of a large company that has many close ties to NYU. he has personal acquaintances with NYU staff, and could influence my admission. i know it may feel like i couldn't get into NYU on my own, but it's not like he's buying my way in because i am still a very good student without his help! it's just an extra boost i guess.

Honestly, I don’t think you have a chance at all

SAT of highest combined of 1230 for math/reading way too low

GPA doesn’t make up for it

Sorry

i think u have about a 30-40% chance CAS regular. your SATs are a bit on the low side, Wut were ur SAT 2? ur class rank? and rank of school in state? ur ethnicity? how do u think ur teacher recs are? Phenonmenal or just good? How much can ur dad influence? cuz there isn’t a place on app where u can write that down lol. How strong were ur essays? u can PM me if u want

3.7 isn’t that bad. It may be a reach for you though (bc of your SAT scores).

3.7 should be weighted or not out of 4.0. It is hard to have 3.7 u/w if you had only Bs and Cs as freshman.

It’s a reach.

SAT scores are far too low even for GSP (which hovers around 1300). It’s probably not happening.

If you’ll be “utterly heartbroken” if you don’t get into NYU, you may want to toughen up. Just in general, sorry.

You should have studied between each SAT taking and made each one count. Retrospect now, but in general, if you are ever going to do something over (Which re-taking the SAT is) then you should really try to study and make sure your time there matters (Ex. my writing score went up by 120 points from one testing to the next, and another 40 my third time)

i mean, yes nyu is definitly a reach for you but you have a chance for sure. and you have a good chance for the gsp. your gpa is really good 3.7 unweighted is GREAT. so that might make up for it. and if you make your essays amazing, you can get in but it’s is not a match school.

Ok, I have to comment back on one of the above posters. How are hir SAT scores “FAR too low?”

25th-75th percentile for the class of '06 were 1210-1410 out of 1600. The OP has a 1230 or 1940.

your SAT’s seem to be the only thing holding you back. Your GPA is great, and so are your extracurriculars. I would say it’s definitely a reach, but certainly apply because you’ll never know.

Go for it–you never know what the admissions committee is thinking…

Apply EA or ED to CAS and write brilliant essays-- I don’t know which one NYU does (EA or ED) but JUST DO IT! Bring up your GPA and maybe think about getting that math/reading score to 1300 (get 700 in math).

I hope that helps.
