Need Harcore help with CR & W

So hey guys... i need harcore help with my CR & Writing. I took a practice SAT and I got a 580 CR and 620 W. (im a freshman btw, so i have time to prepare) also, on the PSAT, i got a 55 w and 57 cr, but 70 m, with 4 foolish mistakes i kno i can amend for tht 80. SO anyways, can u ppl out there who have gotten 800s or even 700-750+ tell me how you guys studied, in detail if posssible? Thanks a very great deal. :)

Have you gone through http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/sat-preparation/763933-new-feature-best-sat-prep-forum-faqs-please-read-before-posting.html?

yeah but my rc is still lacking, probably due to lack of practice, but is there no way to ace the writing section w/o having to know grammer rules? because i can write 12 essays already, thts no problem

I’m not sure what you’re wanting since you want “hardcore” help, but you seem to want it without putting out any effort. You have an enormous amount of time to get ready for the test, which is great, but prep takes work and it requires devoting some serious time. Now I’m not necessarily advocating you need to be doing much now, since you’re a freshman, but what you can do now is just read everything you can get your hands on, from newspapers to novels. That will help you with reading comprehension, vocabulary and grammar as much as anything else. The College Board has a list of recommended reading on its site, so check that out if you need ideas.

For vocabulary, I like a site called [Word-Nerd: vocabulary test prep for the SAT and PSAT](http://www.Word-Nerd.com) and there’s no reason you can’t get started on vocab now, since that’s best done over time. For grammar, you just need to do lots of practice questions. I also like this site, [Grammar Girl :: Quick and Dirty Tips](http://grammar.quickanddirtytips.com/) for grammar, and they have an email list with daily tips that I think is useful.

You have nothing to worry about. I scored in the low 50s in reading, high 50s in writing, and mid 60s in math (and those were in SOPHOMORE year) and I ended up scoring a 2270 on my SAT (and also being in contention for national merit with a 219 on the PSAT).

You’re definitely way above level for a freshman. Give it a few years and you’ll definitely improve naturally, with no prep.

Alrite, thanks for the advice guys! I guess ill be sticking to the practice makes perfect rule! Oh, and btw, when do you guys get time to read? I only get time to read over the summer

Here’s what I recommend:

1) Start immersing yourself in great literature, such as the books on Time’s list.
2) Get subscriptions to The New Yorker & The Economist. These magazines are examples of excellent grammar and writing which will familiarize you with plenty of vocab. If you can’t afford a subscription, you can get them from your local library.
3) Whenever you read a word you don’t know, look it up and put it on quizlet.com. Review the list weekly.

This strategy will ultimately be the most effective at getting a truly high score on the SAT.

Not to sound like a jerk (just freaking out for my own right) but YOU don’t need hardcore help. I need to get a 590 CR/750 M/670 W up 190 points in 2 weeks and I just started studying again on Saturday.

But in all seriousness, you’re in a good place right now, just be more scholarly and read more sophisticated & classic literature and you’ll be in a good place.

@kameronsmith: Ok, thanks, tht sounds like a good plan :D

@CrzyGmer789X2: lol thts true but u usually attract more attention with extreme words haha
oh, and best of of luck on ur SATs  you have a great math score, hope u can get tht 800 :D
