Need Help: Compare Colleges!

@fflmaster: Can you please provide comments after you make your visits? DS has to make decision between NC State, Virginia Tech and OSU for computer science. For some reason the NC State Campus didn’t click with him. (May have had something to do with visiting on a 97 degree day. Therefore, we have waited as long as possible to visit OSU with the hope that the weather will be nice.) Have a visit planned to OSU in early April but have told him he will need to make his decision on the way back in the car. Just hoping Ohio State has a college town feel to it as that is what he wants. All universities are out of state. OSU is most economical due to NBS/Trustees.

@kooth12 My S is trying to decide between the same 3 for Electrical/Computer Engineering. We will be visiting the OSU campus for the first time at the end of the month. Hoping he likes it. We are also OOS and received the same scholarships.

@fflmaster

ABET accreditation would imply a minimum bar with respect to the curriculum and qualifications of professors/instructors (and the school's willingness to prepare for the accreditation process -- it is a lot of work~!), but there can be large differences in students' preparation within the set of ABET accredited schools.

From a placement view-point, surely, not being ABET accredited will be a huge red flag for an employer, but I can’t imagine any employer putting all accredited programs in the same bin.

Let me give a bit of personal perspective. Engineering to a large degree is about getting used to `problem solving’ … the kind of problems you solve change over time as technology changes, but your education gives you competence and competitiveness in solving problems. The more competitive a peer group, the nature of problems you actually solve in your classes becomes naturally harder, and this edge continues with you. So, I think there is an advantage always to studying in a more competitive (higher ranked) place.

@fflmaster can u tell me about ur visit to these campuses?
