I need help!!
I have been accepted into NC state and into Ohio State University Main campus. In NC state for Engineering with intent of doing electrical engineering. Into OSU with intent of doing Electrical and Computer Engineering.
I am in great uncertainty about which college i should go to. I love ECE and would prefer that over only Electrical. But i have been told that OSU has very big classes and some class sizes may be over 100 student and i would like a more concise class size. I am also conserned about safety issues that i have been told about in NC state. I know that according to the rankings, OSU is much bettter but i would be very thankful if someone could help me choose between these universities!!!
Are you in-state for either of them? Have you visited both?
im international(for both obv :P) and i havent visited yet cause going all the way to the US just for visiting the campus wasnt a good enough reason go go to the US…
I am going to have a bias, as you can see from my login-id :).
Nevertheless, here are some ranking comparisons:
National University Ranking: OSU 51, NCSU 89
Classes with 50 or more students OSU 22% NCSU 17%
Freshmen in top 10 percent of high
school class OSU 62% NCSU 52%
Engineering Undergrad Ranking OSU 27 NCSU 31
Electrical Engineering Graduate Ranking OSU 21 NCSU 37
Overall, 22% vs 17% of the classes having more than 50 students isn’t a significant difference – it just means that 2 more classes from about 40 you will take in 4 years will have larger classes.
I haven’t seen any indication to believe that OSU undergrads feel unsafe around campus.
@osuprof
can u link the site where u got the undergrad rankings…i cant find it!!!
Sorry, should have made it clear, all of this data is for USNWR. Search for two universities on their websites and then click on ranking indicators for each. Some of the data I posted is only available if you have a membership, other is free to everyone.
i have membership for USNWR so just post the link ill log in and check it out
WOW…ty @osuprof this really cleared my mind… i think enrolling into OSU was the right choice afterall!!
Since you haven’t been able to visit either campus, it should be mentioned that the OSU campus and surrounding area blows away the NC state campus and surrounding area (in our opinion!) We spent time at NC State with both kids before they made their selections (currently one at OSU and one at UMD).
My sons have the very same question as the OP. We will be visiting next week both campuses.
From my research online:
From all accounts it does seem that NC State has a stronger Co-Op program with a larger career fair (Engineering fields). Raleigh is a much nicer area than Columbus with a much higher Average Income 60K vs 35K.
OSU has a stronger overall ranking (NC State is geared toward STEM) and has nicer buildings with all the new construction set to open.
NC State is just starting a new Engineering building and rebuilding a Greek Village. Centennial Campus NC State is very nice looking area, but again that is only for Engineering.
@fflmaster
If you are looking at NC State for anything besides engineering, please remember one thing. It is not going to be the top state school for that within NC. UNC is a higher ranked school, but doesn’t have an engineering program. NC State was created as the state school.
OSU is the top state school in Ohio - period!.
@osuprof
Totally agree NC State has more competition. I told my boys to look at placement rates for both schools when visiting.
However, with both schools, placements would be farther reaching than just the state they reside in.
Also, price and many other items will come into play for them in choosing which college to attend. My wife is pushing tOSU, so they do have that going for them. I just want both to choose what is right for them.
@fflmaster @osuprof
so what i understand from this is : NC state is better for engineering specifically??!?!
is my understanding in sync with what you guys were trying to convey?

I am not saying the NC State is better or worse in Engineering then OSU. I am just saying NC State does seem to have a better placement rate in their engineering department. I am also saying that NC State seems to have a stronger program in Engineering with Co-Ops and Internships.
I know that my boys will be asking this question to both schools next week when they visit next week.
oh haha @fflmaster , ty for the prompt reply
can the answer the previous question about what i understood from the replies u guys gave earlier!?!?
@fflmaster
i would really appreciate if u could keep me posted about the comments that OSU and NC state make to answer ur sons…
Just a summary and all, cause i dont have the opportunity to visit the school myself u see…
Also, one again thank you for the prompt replies!!!
@osuprof
Can I ask you and anyone else this question.
I hear a lot of other posters on many college pages say that if your college has an ABET accreditation it really doesn’t matter what their ranking is. This is due to the standard education expected throughout the engineering programs under the ABET accreditation. Is this true for placements in engineering? Does ranking not matter?
