I posted this in the chances section, but no one would reply.

I'm a sophomore at Georgia State University and I really need to transfer to UGA or Georgia Tech. Preferably Georgia Tech since I am majoring in computer science. I know a lot of people who haven't gotten in even from transfer which is usually a lot easier than freshman.

I have a 3.67 GPA, but I was stupid and took too few classes. I'm slightly behind. Partly because a lot of classes at GSU won't transfer/weren't equivalent courses. Partly because I was lazy and didn't work hard..same reason I got wait-listed from both schools in the first place.. I have plenty of AP credit though.

Will Tech accept me? What can I do to improve my chances? Do they document who visits the campus and who calls? I live right next to Tech(with a Tech student) so would it help to go on campus tours to show my interest?

Thanks for the reply, but I already know from collegeboard that the acceptance rate is about 50% for transfers. I’m worried about my GPA and lack of courses.

Can you shed some light on that? Also, should I put down a different major to help with my situation?

Did you take all required courses before applying to transfer? What is your Math/Science GPA? And because they recently made transfer a competitive process, your best bet at knowing your chances might just be comparing yourself to last year’s transfer class.

Also, why do you feel you really need to transfer out of GSU? Just curious.

My math GPA is a 3.7 I took calc I and calc II. I have taken all the “pre-reqs” listed on the transfer charts…thankfully I didn’t mess that up too… What else is counted in science GPA? I got As in both my chemistry courses.

GSU is just not for me at all… The academics of the school is nowhere near what I thought it would be and the campus/community life is really bad imo. I went to GSU knowing that I would transfer, but now I just want to leave my current school. I’m just not happy here even after trying to like it. It feels like high school all over again and I just don’t like the environment. The school seems to be having a lot of money problems recently too… After freshman year, I spent most of my time at Tech and I live closer to Tech than I do GSU…with Tech roommates.

Classes included in the Math/Science GPA would be your core math and natural science courses, so no computer science stuff. Basically take the GPA of your two calculus classes and combine them with the GPA from your two chemistry classes.

From what I can tell, you have a good overall GPA and a great Math/Science GPA. I’m not sure if they now consider your major when transferring, but I can tell you that you SHOULD NOT apply as a major other than CS if that is what you want to do. GT may not let you switch majors once you matriculate. So comparing you to the transfer class of 2012, you have a higher overall GPA and (what looks to be) a higher Math/Science GPA. No guarantees, but you look on track to being accepted.

I just got in for CS this semester, and your GPA is definitely higher than mine. On the other hand I was wait listed in the fall, and had to reapply for the spring when it is somewhat less competitive. The majors are evaluated separately, as there exists a finite number of slots for each major. CS is not as competitive to get into as some other majors, like EE for example. I think you’ve got a good shot, this school is definitely worth doing whatever you need to to get in.

Thank you everyone. You have given me hope. I really hope I get in.

Does anyone know if I might be in the range for scholarships? I may lose them after a semester at Tech, but is there a chance for some scholarships for my first semester? Also, will I have problems registering for classes as a transfer student? I may take summer classes to get use to classroom life at Tech.

My major is Industrial Engineering, I go to Florida International University, have a 3.2/3.0 overall/pre-profesional GPA, 57 credits completed but currently (Spring 2013) taking 14 credits. Those credits Being Calc 3, Diff Eq, Programing and Marketing. I’m pretty sure I will finish this semester with all A’s. So, come May, I’ll be sending GA Tech a new set of transcripts with a GPA boost.

Does anyone know my chances of getting in?? Please let me know!

My friend and I got in from MDC with a 3.4 and 3.6 GPA and all the minimum requirements met. I’m not sure what the current requirements are for Industrial Engineering here, but I can tell you that it will probably be one of the harder majors to get accepted into seeing that it’s ranked #1 in the nation. I would recommend that you at least stay at or above their minimum requirements. It looks like you already have the minimum reqs done with math from what I can tell.

I believe my GPA will go up to a 3.4 because, from the looks of it, I’m looking at a 4.0 semester this spring. So If I send my new set of transcripts in may, when grades come out, do you think this GPA boost will up my chances or will GT have made their decision before may? Also, does being out of state give me a better, worse or same chance of getting in?

I get accepted to GSU and I want to do engineer but I couldn’t apply for Georgia tech because it was late. So can I just go to GSU and take classes that can fit into an engineering program for the first 2 years that georgia tech required for transfer students and I will transfer after that years?

@thuanton: the problem is Georgia State doesn’t offer engineering courses (I may be wrong here, but that’s what I know). So even if you meet all the required courses and GPA, and get accepted, you would be way behind those Tech students.

If you want to major in engineering, RETP is what I would recommend. Here is the link :
