Hey so I just wanted to know a little information about raising my GPA. Well I was called into my guidance office earlier this week and we began to talk about college. So I found out my GPA is approximately 3.5 or like a 90.54. The third marking period ends this week so I have one
quarter left and some of senior year to raise it. I mean at this point is it set in stone? Or will it only go up to like a 3.6 no matter how hard I try? Oh and I really wanted to ask you guys what schools I should be looking at, and this my senior year course load:

CAT/PRECALC (2 half year courses)
College Statistics
regular physics
AP bio if it fits
AP English literature
Government/Economics (2 half year courses)
maybe an elective

Ok so with this schedule I'll have taken all the hardest course at my school besides AP Calc. And some of my other stats are 12 out of 75 in my grade, but the #1 is only a 93.6 so it can go up a lot. I have a lot of extracurriculars and sports, but no real leadership experiences. Some hooks I have are I'm black so URM, come from low income single parent, and first in generation to go to college. Oh and I know I can get one great recommendation and one alright recommendation. So what colleges should I be looking at I live in NY. SAT Scores are 700 CR and 720 M, not going to list writing since its bad and first pick doesn't look at it. I'm going to apply to Cornell early decision and two people in my school have gotten in last two years one with slightly better GPA with worst SATs and other with both worst but I heard crazy good essays. Oh and practice ACT 32 and may actually take real test in June and hope to get a 34. So again what colleges should I be looking at, Chances at Cornell, and probability of raising my GPA. Thanks for all the help

Is your 3.5 weighted or unweighted? If weighted… A 3.5 into Cornell? You better be going to one of the most competitive schools in the country, cause a 3.5 won’t cut it at the vast majority of high schools. You won’t be able to raise your GPA more than a few tenths unless you somehow pull out a 5.0 this last quarter and the first quarter of your senior year. SATs are fine, cause Cornell apparently doesn’t consider writing. You can find Cornell’s SAT and other data here http://dpb.cornell.edu/documents/1000504.pdf#pagemode=bookmarks.

Which college in Cornell do you plan on applying too? Your school’s grading is a little different then most school’s. Your GPA appears low yet your class rank isn’t terrible- top 20% you are in. I would focus on trying to get into the top 10%- that is almost a requirement for getting into a college like Cornell. And retake the SAT too and study. A 1420 isn’t terrible but doesn’t make you a solid applicant. Try to get a 1500+ if possible. Or a 34+ ACT.

My school’s grading isn’t weird or anything its just that very small school with only like 250 people in the high school only, and people here are just chill. I mean once your out of the top 27 the GPA is like a 79 and people don’t really care at all about school. And then the people in the top care, but don’t like try to get a 99 GPA. And my 3.5 is unweighted, but there aren’t many weighted classes that you can take as I said only 5 APs, and no real honors classes where there is weighting. So weighted it wouldn’t go up that much. And I know 3 people who got into Cornell in the last couple of years, and only one was that much better than me. One had a 93 GPA or like a 3.8 and 1920 SAT, but don’t no individual scores. Other guy lower than me had a 89 or 88 so like a 3.4, but his essay was supposedly crazy good, don’t know SATs. The last guy was last years valedictorian who had a 99.3 GPA like a 2250 SAT so I get why he got in. These are the only people who applied and they all got in. I mean are the people with the lower GPA crazy exceptions that you guys have never heard of. And my friend had a 93.5 and I have a 90.54 is that really a huge difference to college admissions?

No. They consider 10th of 10th of other factors.

@dfree: I’m saying that colleges look into 10th of 10th of other factors, like GPA, Class rank, work experience, ECs, College essay, SAT. The OP seem to be putting all his/her hope into just 3 out of the many factors. And seem intent of GPA.

this is really entertaining.
