Need info on IU Cello Professors

We are in the process of getting a day scheduled to visit Jacobs SOM at Indiana U. on one of the very few days we have available in mid August. The Office of Admin. said some of the cello staff would be there during that time and we could most likely schedule a lesson or a meeting. But other than J Starker, I know nothing of the other 2 - - and I don't know too much about J. Starker for that matter.

If anyone has info they'd care to share, please post or PM me. Reading their bios doesn't help me much. I'd like to hear about teaching, personality traits, etc. I also have a call into my son's current summer teacher as well.

Emilio Col

I can't see how you could go wrong with any of the three. Starker is a top performing cellist and instructor, often mentioned in the same breath as Aldo Parisot (@ Yale). Colon appears to a former student of Starker. Sharon Robinson is a founding member of Kalich-Robinson-Laredo Trio, a very well known small ensemble together now for probably 20 years.

I don't know teaching styles or methodologies specifically, but with Starker and Robinson, you've got two of the most well respected performing artists on the instrument.

See what son's studio teacher's take is.

I have heard rumors that certain teachers at IU take almost exclusively grad students. This may or may not be true for the teachers you mention, but you may wish to ask the office how many freshmen are in each of those studios before trying to set up a lesson.

Thanks violadad and BassDad.

We are also planning to visit Oberlin, even tho that might just be for fun or for comparison. But, any input on their cello professors?

Catharina Meints is widely reconized in Early Music circles as one of the top viola da gamba and Baroque cello pedagogues worldwide. She has also been in the cello section of the Cleveland Orchestra for over 35 years, although I do not see her name on the current roster. Her husband (who was also on the Oberlin faculty) passed away a bit over a year ago, and I do not know what her plans for the future are. She would be an excellent choice on modern cello and one of the elite few for anyone interested in Early Music.

I do not know much about Darrett Adkins or Amir Eldan, both pupils of Joel Krosnick at Juilliard, but they both appear to have excellent credentials.

rudysmom- shennie's son is a cellist, starting his masters in cello performance at Mannes in the fall. You may want to PM her for some of her son's thoughts and experiences.

My kid knows several students of Darrett Atkins, at Oberlin, Juilliard, and Aspen -- they love him; he's had a chamber music coaching with him and says he is demanding but terrific. Nice too. Emir Eldar is also excellent.

I suggest you post your query on the Cello Chat message board (cello.org/letstalk.htm). This is an extremely active forum of cellists run by the Internet Cello Society that I'm sure has many IU alums among its members.

Will do. Thanks to all!
