Due to the terrible academia job market, strong teaching is found at a much wider range of schools than strong peers. The peers may not matter so much for science or business, but in the humanities, discussion is core–and if one is consistently top of the class, satisfying discussion may be hard to come by. Too far of a mismatch in either direction is not worth it.

Hey ! my brother and sister graduated from TCNJ and both loved it! Also, both got jobs right out of school…it’s also my top choice.
The school’s great, however, i believe it depends on what you want to study! It’s an excellent school for education which is what my S majored in. I too want to major in education, (secondary math), which is why TCNJ is towards the top of my list. It’s a beautiful campus and by the beginning of the 2009 Fall Semester brand new apartments are set to be completed. All of the facilities are excellent, including a recently renovated library.

Also, i noticed you didn’t include Montclair State U on your list…recently MSU has been becoming a better school, also an excellent school for teaching, and i believe music is big there as well…anyway, they’re in the process of adding new buildings and renovating some parts of campus, so it’s also beginning to look better than it ever has. It’s in a decent location as well…if you walk about 1/4th of a mile off campus you’re standing at a train station which could take you on about a 30 minute ride to NYC.

So overall, I love TCNJ and it’s a great school theres absolutley no denying it. Also, if you are planning to go to school in Jersey, don’t count out Montclair State U.!

I had a professor with degrees from Harvard, Tufts and MIT and he was a terrible professor. It doesnt make a difference where professors went.

dion- see my post 18 I agree.

Monmouth is the NJ version of Pepperdine. A bunch of my friends go there and if you’re not ready for kids who drive 750Li’s and wear gucci daily, then don’t go there. ok maybe i exaggerated a bit but its has a VERY snobby reputation. oh and the dorms are palaces.

Sounds like Hofstra.

B man 22, please explain why nj is not the place to go to school.

^^

I’ll be honest, some of it is quite biased considering the fact that I can’t stand New Jersey any longer and that I am getting the -bleep- out of here the first chance I get.

There’s nothing special about this state. I dislike the people, there aren’t that many beautiful places, and there is nothing to do. We lack so much compared to New York and Pennsylvania.

The only place that is worth attending in jersey would be Princeton, obviously. I actually live here basically, and it’s a wonderful place. But I can’t stay here any longer, so I doubt I would even attend Princeton were I to be accepted.

Also, the state school system sucks. Rutgers is getting packed, and it’s not even a good school. It pales in comparison to the UCs, the Virginias, UMich, Penn State, among others. What’s so special about Rutgers? A lot of Indians and Asians, basically. It’s High School 2.0 for the in-staters.

The other schools aren’t even ranked, or are ranked very low. The only other considerable school would be TCNJ, but even that has very negative connotation for in-staters, at least in my school. We mock student teachers that hail from that place.

Besides that, what other university/college is of noteworthy? Rowan is HS 2.0, since about a quarter of my class is going there (hyperbole, but you get the point). Montclair State…what? NJIT is trash, Rider is uhm…

All I’m trying to say is that there are far stronger alternatives to go to school than dirty Jersey.

B Man, I do agree with his points on Rutgers. Its not too great and pretty much in the ghetto.

But if you think NJ is overall a bad place to live, then you obviously havn’t been to the nice parts. the beaches are second to SoCal and Florida. I’m 15 mins from 4 huge malls, 20 mins from trump’s golf course, and 20 mins to belmar. Oh and the girls here aren’t all that bad lookin.

Ive lived here for 10 years. loved every minute of it.

Yeah, I never understood the allure of Rutgers or why it’s ranked so highly. I go to Temple with a LOT of NJ kids, and asked them why they didnt stay in state at Rutgers and they basically said who the hell would want to go to Rutgers? I dont think Rutgers is better than Temple at all, but according to the silly rankings, it is. Whatever.

Rutgers has a terrible reputation among students. It’s ranked high in US News but students who live in NJ and/or go to the school mostly don’t like it or hate it. I dunno why that is but that seems to be the trend.

^^truth.

bmw dude wth are you talking about? theres no beaches 20 minutes from bedminster. i’d like to hear the name of this town lol. and the beaches arent amazing here(besides pt pleasant and spring lake)…only state where you have to pay to get on beaches gets stupid real quick

umm you dont have to pay to go to point pleasant. atleast i never had to.

anyway TCNJ imo is the best college here, well minus Princeton. Rutgers is my safety right now, the only thing that draws me away is the fact (someone pointed it out here) its high school 2.0, i don’t want to see everyone from my town and private school there. i want to meet new people, and rutgers just isnt the place for me.

right now i’m leaning towards schools in PA only because its far away from home … yet still close? idk if that makes sense. but anyway, bucknell, temple, and penn state are getting apps from me.

i’m not too familiar with any private colleges here though, except for seton hall, which half my hs is probably going to end up in as well. so no thanks to that one. so for me: TCNJ > Rutgers > Ramapo. and FDU no thanks, i can literally walk to the campus.

Rutgers is lame. NJ kids come to Temple instead of Rutgers for a reason.

^ I am pretty sure the students who do this is because they didn’t get into Rutgers.

probably the most out of state students that go to Clemson are from New Jersey

thats illegal…lol

for the exception of princeton…nj schools blow.

its not much harder to get into temple than rutgers in-state. its a new experience.

tcnj is overrated its a teachers college

Not remotely close to true.

don’t forget about Montclair State I happen to think it’s even on par with TCNJ, overall. In terms of students, academics, and the campus life.

Everyone at Montclair State transfers to Temple because they hate it.
