Need inside story about NJ colleges

hahahahaha I’ve heard good things about Rowan’s engineering program (better than Temple :p)

Yeah, Rowan’s engineering program is definitely not better than ours.

Thank you! It’s a glorified state school. It’s great for teaching or nursing or fields similar to those (I’ll even give it engineering!), but the name carries almost no weight outside of the tri-state area or even NJ for that matter and it’s other programs are mediocre. It’s a competitive school for NJ students but vastly overrated. People in NJ take TCNJ’s one USNWR ranking for a Master’s program and run it to no end!

Rutgers is, well…Rutgers. It has name recognition and you’ll get a good education but as it’s been stated, it doesn’t even compare to other top public schools. A lot of NJ residents use the old “it was invited to be in the Ivy League!” or “it’s getting more and more competitive each year” as a means to defend the school’s reputation. It’s a good school and very affordable, but c’mon, let’s be real now, Rutgers is no Michigan or Berkeley and it’s DEFINITELY no Harvard.

Rutgers was never invited to join the Ivy League. I’ve heard multiple people say this. It’s simply untrue.

besides the ivy league is an athletic conference, not an academic conference

My mother went to Rider, and even she admits that the dorms are terrible, but the reputation has been going up over the years…still not that great. My brother goes to Ramapo, and I would say that it is the best looking campus besides Princeton (and I have seen most of the others including Rutgers/Drew/TCNJ). I would also say TCNJ is overrated, and Ramapo is probably catching up to it, but it is still one of the newest. To be honest, I really disliked TCNJ’s campus, but that’s just me.

Ramapo has a rising reputation, and is a nice campus with fine dorms. Seton Hall is selective in their business school admissions, which has a very good reputation, alumni, internships and close to NYC, Rutgers is a good state school with a diverse population of students, Rider is an upcoming college with poor facilities but close to Princeton, Montclair and FDU are both fine schools. Monmouth is in a nice location near to the beach and has great dorms. All are fine schools as well if you are planning to remain in NJ…they are basically the same in selectivity (except for the business school in Seton Hall), vary in location, dorm, campus appearances, facilities and cost…not to mention sports offered and the quality of the programs. Be sure to check out each factor above to find the best fit for you in New Jersey.

wow so much rutgers hating going on here. i mean i dont see myself graduating from it or anything. but if i did end up going i’d transfer out. i dont think its COMPLETELY HORRIBLE.

Rutgers is a fine NJ state school, which admits applicants of different academic, athletic and interest groups…quite typical of many state school systems - just a different culture than a private LAC or private college experience, one of the top perks - the cost for in state students!!

The only knowledge I have about Rider is that it’s English Department and Geology Department are both very good. The Geology faculty has a stellar background and have won awards. The English Department is equally very well staffed with professors who’ve taught at elite colleges before coming to Rider.
