I got 17k dollars of grants and 10k dollars of loan out of a full tuition of 46k. Since it is too late today, I will call on Monday to ask them to review/appeal my financial aid. What can I say to the person to make it a convincing and persuasive argument? I really want to go to this college (Carnegie Mellon University) and have a very good offer from Boston College (40k out of 46k). Can I mention something about this offer to help me get some more money from Carnegie Mellon?

Yes, definitely! If both are the same packages (need-based v. need-based or merit v. merit as opposed to merit v. need) then you should let Carnegie Mellon know that BC offered you more.

Especially since CMU is really into the whole compare-and-compete-with-what-other-schools-gave-you bit

well, BC isnt a university on par with CMU. They say 'Comparable' university

Still, it couldn't hurt

Be prepared to fax them a copy of the offer. Get a cover letter ready to go before you call, and be standing by a fax machine...
