Need Some Advice Please

Hello everyone, I’m in quite a peculiar case in which I completely my first two years of college while still in highschool. Now keeping this in mind, I attended a university and due to personal health reasons I had to leave the first semester with a not so great GPA which means I will probably not be accepted as a transfer anywhere? And I don’t think I can take any GPA boosting classes since I’ve already completed my associates degree so I’m a bit at a loss for what I can do here…I would really like some help if you all have any suggestions on how I could possibly boost my GPA??? I’m desperate for any information you may have, thank you so much!

Please explain the method by which you earned your associates. Was this a program within your high school? For example, are you at a Bard HS that includes 2 years of college? Or maybe your high school allowed you to take classes at a local college (which is common in NYC for example).

Please explain how you earned your associates while still in high school.

The method I earned my associates was by attending courses at a local community college. Our HS Campus was on the college campus so we would walk over to the college and attend classes there!

Okay great. This is important info. Are you in NYC by any chance? This is a common way for some NYC high schools to allow their students to have higher level courses while staying in high school.

What year are you graduating from HS? In other wrods, were these classes part of your HS experience formally? Or did youi formally complete HS and then attend CC?

No I am not right now I’m in Texas. Also I have already graduated, * graduated May 2016 and the classes were a part of my HS experience.

Okay that’s important because colleges count those courses differently if they were part of your HS experience as opposed to courses that you took after HS.

To find out how a college counts those courses, go to the admissions page of your favorite college. That page will list different types of students. If you click on the type that applies to you, you will see how they count your courses.

My general impression is that courses taken as part of your HSexperience count as HS from the college’s perspective. They would count you as a freshman applicant. If you’d graduated and then taken the Associate’s degree, then you would be counted as a transfer student.

Let me see if I can find a couple of examples.

UT AUSTIN
UT Austin defines a transfer student as someone who has completed college classes AFTER HS.
https://admissions.utexas.edu/apply/transfer-admission

UT Austin says that if you have not enrolled in a college AFTER GRADUATING HS then you can apply as a freshman applicant-- https://admissions.utexas.edu/apply/freshman-admission

SARAH LAWRENCE
SL has slightly different criteria for transfer vs. freshman applicant–

REED COLLEGE
They explicitly say that if you were in HS and enrolled as a dual student, then you’re a freshman applicant
http://www.reed.edu/apply/guide-to-applying/transfer/index.html

Okay??? I think that you need to figure out what college you love and then look at their criteria. But the vast majority will prob call you a freshman applicant and count your college classes as part of your HS experience.

best of luck

Well the thing is just this fall I went to another University to continue my education and took 12 hours but i didn’t do very well on them so my problem is that most universities require a minimum GPA from the college you previously attended not including dual credit! Which means I am stuck with a low GPA without any way to get it up because I’ve already taken all the classes that I can for my associates and I have already left the University I was at. Hopefully this makes sense? But this is what I’m Particularly worried about…

I see what your issue is. You DID enroll in a university after high school, correct? Then you’d be a transfer student. UNLESS the colleges you apply to need more than 12 hours to count you as a transfer student. Some require more than that. Under X number of hours you are still a freshman admit. Over X number of hours you are a transfer.

Check the individual websites of colleges for their criteria.

If you are considered transfer AND you are worried about GPA, you can attempt to pull up your average, by taking another semester or two. Then you can transfer with a higher average.

As a freshman admit your GPA including your college work may still be considered.

My thought, until there’s more evidence otherwise, is that you should spend another semester or two bringing up your GPA and then transferring.

How bad were your health issues? Can you get a retroactive medical withdrawal from your university?

If you do know the place that you would like to apply to now, contact the admissions office and set up an appointment with a senior member of the admissions staff to discuss your specific situation. if your grades were primarily due to the medical issues, and those issues are now fully resolved, there may be more flexibility in how your application is handled.

Consult your university about your health issue …If they are not responding means…Get some professors help…They will guide you what to do next…Because they had seen many of students like you…
