need some expert advice from you guys please

ok so i did very bad in highschool (had about a 2.2 gpa) mostly becuase of personal reasons. However, i sucked it up and did very well once i went to a community college. Last year i went to community college i recieved a 3.97 gpa for the full year. I didnt apply anywhere because i want to go to an elite school. however if i contiune my success and get around a 4.0 gpa again this year will the schools i apply to erase out all of my highschool gpas?

schools i will apply to: (chance me)

Syracuse, Bates, Bowdoin, Cornell, Boston College, Villanova, Providence, Colby, and Florida State

even though all of these schools deadlines are around March and April do they still look at my highschool gpa due to the face that i havent yet finished my two years at CC?

Any info/advice/comments i would appreciate thanks you guys give good advice and opinions!

With an outstanding reflective essay, you should be a somewhat competitive applicant (contingent on decent SAT scores) to Cornell, Bowdoin, and BC. I would say you have an excellent chance at the remaining schools. Just make sure your GPA is close to a 4.0 as possible.

Not to echo a previous post, but your high school record is still going to be a factor in admission, more so at Cornell, BC, and Bowdoin. However, a strong personal statement might be able to mitigate the damage. The transfer process is a long and unpredictable one, and I wish you the best. You have a great chance of attending one of exceptional schools listed.

thanks a lot so do you think i should apply for the fall of next year and remain at community college. i will try to keep it close to a 4.0, rack up some EC’s. most of these schools say after one year or 30 credits they no longer need your SATS becuase i never took them so i dont know how i would do

bump…

also my father passed away my senior year in high school (i did terrible in school that year) would colleges be willing to accept that I went through a hard time. I know its not an excuse but I matured quickly and realized that I had to get good grades if I wanted to gain admission to a top tier school. I would love advice of what I should do to gain admission to any of these schools/recommend me schools which you believe i could get into

STATS

HS GPA: 2.2
3 varsity sports all four years

College GPA: 3.97 first year

lots of EC’s for both college and high school; special ed assistant, sports, club leader, jobs

honestly i just did nothing end of junior and senior year I regret it but i would really appreciate anything you guys have to say, Thanks!

i just wrote about this in another post so some of the info may seem copy/pasted.

i don’t think we can chance you just off of your gpa. elite schools take into account many factors. gpa is weighted heavily but it is not by any means the sole factor. so, when you say you want to go to X schools with a GPA of Y, it doesn’t mean much.

it seems like your gpa was so low, but you managed to play varsity sports all year? that seems to me like you just didn’t put time into your studies and instead chose to play sports. im not saying that is the reason, but im saying that’s how it may look to admissions committees on paper. varsity sports are great, but it seems you sacrificed your gpa in the process which isn’t attractive to top tier schools. EDIT: just saw you lost your dad senior year. im so sorry, that is really sad. you can use this in a personal essay explaining why your grades were poor and how you’ve grown from the experience.

i can’t speak for the other schools besides cornell, but i am going to assume they are somewhat similar.
yes. your hs record will be a factor. it will be less of a factor depending on how long ago you graduated and if you can provide compelling reasons for the terrible gpa. compelling reasons do not equal a whiny or sob-story essay. compelling reasons are significant personal issues that you have since overcome. (they won’t want to admit if you if the same reasons you did poorly in hs are still present).

im going to assume you just graduated last year? if so, that really isn’t enough time to show that you’ve changed academically. and as another poster on this forum stated in a similar thread, a shiny new gpa isn’t a compelling reason for admissions to the schools you’re looking at.

if you want to transfer to cornell, you’ll need a 4.0 GPA; a few but major ecs (long hours, leadership positions obtained, fit into your personal, career, or academic goals); amazing letters or rec by professors who know you very well (you need to have taken their classes(s) and pref worked with them outside of class as well); amazing essays; academic awards and honors

i just posted in this thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/transfer-students/980182-transfering-ivy.html</a> (the OP) has a similar question, so you may want to check out those replies

hey footballman, I don’t think your hs grades will matter much if you transfer junior year, after all, that’s why community colleges exist. They will just look at your GPA, ECs and essays for the most part, and those that require SATs will obviously consider them for admission

Also, I’ve heard that ECs aren’t as important in CC, so if you are going to do ECs, make them related to your major, and show that you’re passionate passionate about them.

Provided you write an excellent essay, show huge interest in particular ECs, and maintain high GPA, I think your chances at getting into any schools that don’t require SAT are pretty good
