So, I just got my latest SAT scores and it came out to be 1820, and I have a 3.88 GPA out of 4 and I wanna go to the College of Biological Sciences in UMN TC. What are my chances? To anyone who went there, can you tell me what you did in HS to get into that College?

What kind of classes did you take? What level of difficulty?

hcarool…Your GPA looks very solid. What is your class rank? Here is a link showing the stats for admitted students for the fall of 2010. According to the stats, 80% of the admitted students to CBS were in the top 10% of their high school class and the average Math+CR score on the SAT was 1342.

[Academic Profile](Academic Profile of Fall 2022 Admitted Freshman Applicants by College | Office of Admissions)

You can compare your stats with the Admitted students profile and see where you stand. Realize that CBS and CSE are the two toughest colleges to get into at U of Minn, so the competition is a little tougher. Some students also apply to CLA in case they don’t get admitted to their first choice college and look to transfer into CBS/CSE after freshman year.

Have you taken the ACT yet, or are you planning to? Some students score better on one standardized test versus the other, so it’s something to consider. Your SAT score is pretty good, but you can always try retaking it to improve your chances. Good Luck!!

proculus, I have taken mostly honors and regular classes, because that all my school offers. But next year, it also offers APs so I am taking 3 of them and couple honors.
Wolverine86, my class rank is top 10%. The only think is that I got 1240 out of 1600 in the SAT I recently took, not 1342 which is their average. And I am OOS… I know I can compare myself in that Academic Profile page, but I want to know you guys opinions on my chances?

I think you should feel good about at least getting in the liberal arts program (if they don’t admit you into your choice college, they automatically apply you for CLA, then you could potentionally change colleges a little later, which is much easier than going to some other school entirely and then trying to switch back into umn).
As for the college of biological sciences, it’s hard for me to say. It doesn’t look like a sure, sure thing, but it seems like your stats are within a reasonable range. But, remember, I’m a CSE girl, and I know way more about that college. Everyone I know whose going to umn is either applied to cse like me, or cla. And BTW, my stats for ACT (I didn’t take the SAT) was lower than their ave, and I still got in right away. I got a 29 when the ave is 30.3, though my hat in the hole was a ton of advanced math courses, including two AP maths and a total of 5 math credits in four years. I know with CSE they really likes you to have taken calc , which I took this year, and be good in math since its such an integral part of the all of CSE’s curriculums.
