<p>Noted philanthropist, Alfred Mann, has donated funds to endow chairs at the Manhattan School of Music and the USC Thornton School of Music. The two schools will share the $6 million donation.</p>
<p>The new endowed chairs will be in honor of Alfred Mann's brother, Robert Mann, a NYC violinist.</p>
<p>Alfred Mann has made philanthropic donations to various universities and charities. One of his larger donations was to fund the Mann Institute for Biomedical Engineering at USC with a gift of $112.5 million. He also donated $104 million to Technion (Israel).</p>

<p>It was announced that Robert Mann will occupy the new endowed Mann Chair for Violin at the Manhattan School of Music according to the NYTimes.</p>
<p>At the Thornton School of Music the new endowed chair will join three chairs for strings named for previous faculty at Thornton: Jascha Heifetz Chair held by Midori Goto, Gregor Piatigorsky chair held by Ralph Kirshbaum and the Eleanor Shoenfeld Chair held by Alice Schoenfeld. The new holder of the Mann chair will be announced later in the year. </p>
