Just found out today I was nominate to engineering and a good friend of mine to science. I have noticed that the science kids are much more connected than we are. Let's make an effort to connect with each other in spite of the asocial tendencies of engineers.

Nominees unite (?)

Can any past gov. school engineers on CC impart some knowledge on the application process?

The essays are generic but they aren’t too bad. Except for the first one. I still have no clue how I should write that one. And I don’t think they see your junior year grades either, so you should be fine there (I can’t say so much for myself, sophomore year was a bit less than I hoped for).
I would start one but I have no idea who is nominated, so that’s a problem.

They do see your junior year grades. These essays… ugh…
Hope you get nominated. I was thrilled when I found out my friend got sci and I got eng.

@PorcupineCup They do see them? Well that lifts my spirits a bit. Only Spanish is sorta depressing this year. Although I did have to take CP Physics, thanks to the horrible scheduling policies of my school… Yeah the essays are started to mess with me, the first one just doesn’t improve no matter how I phrase it. As for the rec letters I don’t think so, but I do know my teachers are using my schools official header, if that helps answer your question.

@minniemice18 I’m pretty sure that although grades are important, passion and interest in engineering are more important. Make your essays and short answers show this and you should balance out. Like PorcupineCup said, stand out in other ways.

May I also mention best of luck to both of you! This looks like a very exciting opportunity.

I just got the materials for the application last week, and I’ve been working on the essays on my holiday break, too. The questions aren’t super in depth, but they definitely make you think!

I’m actually dying to get into this program. Just from reading the overview on the application it looks like an incredible opportunity to learn more about engineering and meet like-minded people.

The NJGSET actually has a Youtube channel where they posted videos of the final presentations from last year. They’re all really advanced and fascinating!

Best of luck to all of you! I’m going to go back to writing my essays now. I’ll probably come back on here soon to ask some actual questions. :P

Hopefully all of your applications are coming along nicely :)

I do have a question concerning the essays…

Throughout the first 3 essays I’ve emphasized that I am very passionate about Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.

However on the fourth prompt, which asks me to explain a topic I find fascinating, I find it easier to talk about aeronautics (Something I am also very passionate about, but have not shown in school or after school).

I was wondering, is it bad to ruin this continuity between my interests? I mean its not like I’m writing about something I have no interest in, but its completely different from my previously stated interest?

Do you have any advice concerning which route is best?

Thanks! And good luck to you all who are applying! :D

Funny, I love aerospace engineering and astronomy. I stuck with my faves being chem and aerospace the entire except for my most meaningful activity, which I put as something completely unrelated. I think it’s fine to write whatever you feel you can write the best.

It’s glad to see other nominees. I’m surprised that i got nominated from my school. I got nominated for engineering by the way. How about you guys?

Sorry about the dumb questions but Jfuuuuu says that he has 3 essays. That’s why I was confused. Porcupine, how are you coming along on your essays?

For the short responses, it doesn’t have a limit on words or pages but I’m guessing that it has to be under 500 words, right?

I know that the essays has to be under a page.

I think I finished them. To be honest, they are not too great. Hoping my test scores and recs will make up for them.
Short Response, try not to go over a page. Brevity is key. I did exactly two paragraphs for each, each paragraph with around seven sentences.
I wish someone who was in the program last year or years before could shed some light on the process…

@Hawkace
Yes they are the same essays… And yea I was surprised when I was nominated too, my PSATs are not that nice…

@PorcupineCup
thanks for the advice :)

Also, my school is making the app due on the 3rd so they can take care of the transcript and mail it in for me… I was wondering, just out of curiosity, are your school doing it differently?
