New Studio Faculty Announced!

[New Studio on Broadway Faculty Announcement: Tisch School of the Arts at NYU](http://drama.tisch.nyu.edu/object/dr_newstudio_facultyannouncement.html)

I am so impressed by the faculty they have hired. The head of voice was nominated for a Tony for Jim in Big River. And the head of acting also teaches at Yale Drama School. Wow.

Hopefully this will put to rest many of the doubters. Obviously Tisch is committed to hiring the best faculty and creating an excellent program.

Not to mention how Sutton Foster will still be with the program.

Clay, I’m glad that they have finally been able to finalize contracts and publicly release this information! I know a few of those individuals well and Michael I’ve known for many years. He will be fabulous in that position. He’s a talented, intelligent, experienced performer who has one of the best set of pipes I’ve ever heard. (Lots of his work on youtube. His I’ll Cover You: Reprise from Rent is still my favorite) He’s also an amazingly generous, kind, and sweet human being. The kids will love him.

I have several friends who are BFA acting majors at CSU Long Beach who absolutely love Orlando Pabotoy and speak very highly of him  They are very sad to see him go. I’m sure he will be as loved at the New Studio.

I’m a little bit confused though- are there going to be more faculty added to this list? 6 teachers seems a small number for such a large studio.

monologue, remember that in the coming school year, there is just the freshman class. Each year, a new class of incoming students is added. So, at that juncture, they’d need more faculty, I would imagine.

^ You’re completely right  I had totally forgotten about that. Haha no wonder its so small!

Can students in other studios take Sutton’s class if it is an elective for the Department of Drama? My heart skipped a beat when I saw this!

Yes, If I’ve got my numbers right, the MT Studio is admitting 64 students and the Acting Studio is admitting 32. So, it’s approximately a 96 student body for the New Studio–give or take. A good start to the Studio and a good roster of new instructors. We are so excited! (DS is New Studio MT.) Will definitely post during the inaugural year to give feedback on the process. Best!

Billy, yes, as I wrote above, Sutton’s cabaret class, at least the one that has been offered THIS current semester, is a Theater Studies elective and those are open to students in all studios. It is NOT a studio class at present. It cannot count as your studio class. It is under Theater Studies, and all BFA Drama students need Theater Studies credits. I don’t know if next year whether Sutton will teach classes IN New Studio on Broadway and if so, those courses would be just for THAT studio. But currently, the cabaret class is not a studio class and is in Theater Studies, which all students can take as it is not a studio class. You can’t take classes in other studios. Just your own studio. But everyone can and has to take classes in Theater Studies. Sutton’s current cabaret class is by audition and it is small. It results in a public cabaret performance.

I see for this coming fall, there will be several cabaret workshop electives offered, not just one like this semester. This semester was with Sutton. If there are several in the fall, it says it is TBA as far as more information but it will again be by audition and result in a public cabaret performance. Again, it is a an elective for 2 credits.

I suspected that would have to be the case. It’s the easiest way to control who is in the class.

“It results in a public cabaret performance.”

As such, this year, no freshman were allowed to take it, do to the no performance rule, much to our dismay.

Why were you dismayed, monologue? Were you not aware that freshmen are precluded from performing?

Also, the class meets on Tuesdays from 4-6 I believe, or is it 5-7. But anyways it meets Tuesdays afternoon, and Freshman have studio Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, making it impossible for most of us to do.

But I was totally fine with that, just like auditioning for Tisch shows, there are lots of opportunities that they want you to start exploring after your freshman year. Most Tisch Drama Electives are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays too, probably because they want students to get a year of training first and get acclimated before they start exploring other more advanced topics.

No no, I meant I was saddened because I had to wait to take Sutton’s class! I was fully of the no performance policy coming in.
