There’s a new summer science research and enrichment program at Yale: http://yspa.yale.edu. It’s for students who are currently juniors. It focuses on physics, astronomy, and computer programming.
This sounds incredibly exciting! I’m gonna apply, but I wonder how difficult it’ll be to get accepted…
Yeah it does say that the program will allow students to get letters of recommendation from the professors. I also think this program is really awesome, and it’s right up my alley. I actually already have Python programming experience and have even programmed an astronomy related program before. But I’m sure it would still be very beneficial. I’ll likely be applying as well.
I just saw this. It seems ssssooo cool and right up my alley too. It just sucks that it costs so much I mean what can I expect; it’s the same for SSP which is really similar to it. I still need to decide whether I should apply to either, because unless I come across $5000 or do some crazy fundraising I wouldn’t be able to go even if I got accepted.
YSPA offers financial aid if you get accepted, so it’s worth applying.
Thank you so much for posting this. I’m an international student (Canada) and was really bummed to find out that RSI is not accepting applications from Canadians this year (unless they are from Newfoundland). Do you think that the program is up there in terms of prestige (with RSI, TASP, etc?) Also, would I be able to use the research done at YSPA in science fairs and competitions?
Also, could someone offer a comparison of SSP and YSPA?
@Shree813, next summer is the first year for YSPA, so I think it’s hard to comment on the prestige or compare it with anything else. But it is Yale…
Regarding YSPA vs. SSP, I know some of the people teaching and organizing the new Yale program are SSP alumni, so I think some things will be similar, but it looks like YSPA will be more focused on research (like RSI). Based on the website, there’s a bigger emphasis on coding and research.
Bumping this thread, because YSPA sounds pretty awesome. Does anyone know if it will be possible to do a full-fledged research project (i.e. for Intel STS/Siemens) in YSPA?
Also YSPA is only 4 weeks residential with 2 weeks of studying before the program.
And I don’t think it’s any research project that could be taken to a science fair but I’m not positive.
@picats3141, yes, that should be possible.
