New Transfer student - Emory

I just received my financial aid package and getting my stuff together to head out to Emory as a transfer student. I applied for housing...my request were singles or apartment type for the room selection. Still haven't heard any word on it though (I applied last week). Is there a chance that I might not get a room? If I don't that will not be a problem if I can get an cheap studio near campus, but as you can see from my account name I am from New Jersey and never been to Atlanta Georgia so I am not sure where to look for cheap studios/apartments...

Lastly, is there a specific date for transfers to move in or is it just a couple days before classes begin?

Thanks.

I’m pretty sure there is a transfer orientation that begins about a week before classes start, give or take. I’m sure there is info on the Emory College website.

As far as housing, you should be ok. They save housing for transfer students. If you’re a sophomore, you’ll probably be in either Woodruff/Clifton Tower, which is on Clifton Road, across from the Nursing School; Complex, which is on main campus near the library; or in Clairmont Tower, which is on Clairmont Campus (about a mile away on the other side of Lullwater, which is Emory’s nature preserve. There are shuttles between the those campuses every 5 min or so. It’s beautiful, though some people prefer to live closer to main campus to avoid taking the shuttle. All depends what you want.).

If you’re a junior, the vast majority (maybe only?) housing is on Clairmont Campus. It’s all apartment style.

If you don’t get housing, I’d be very surprised. In that case, check with the housing office to see if they can put you into contact with other transfer students that didn’t get housing. Alternatively, seek out friends from HS that go to school at Emory/in Atlanta or even friends of friends. I’m sure there are still people who need roommates or at least need to sublet a room for the semester.

I could give you the names of some apartment complexes that are very popular with students and close to campus, but I really don’t think you’ll need it. If you do end up needing off campus housing, feel free to send me a message, and I’ll send you a list.

Good luck and congrats on your Emory acceptance.

Thank you so much for the help. I don’t mind taking the shuttle to get to my classes. I actually enjoy my personal space so I can focus on my studies. I think I’m leaning towards apartment style. As long as I have my own bedroom and there is a kitchen (I cook for my family now) I think it would be great. I’m 21 years old and will turn 22 this up coming November…not sure if age will play a factor when and if they select a room for me.

It’s more dependent on what year you are - Do you have junior status or sophomore status? And I’m not sure you’ll have all that much choice, as I think it’s assigned. If you’re a sophomore, it’s much more likely that you’ll share a room than if you’re a junior. All of the clairmont apartments residents have their own bedroom within a shared apartment except for those in clairmont tower. Those are all double rooms, with two bedrooms per apartment (4 people per apt).

I don’t know how complex is going to be next year, as it’s being totally renovated. I would assume there will be mostly doubles. Maybe someone else here knows.

From what I see (passing by the construction everyday), Complex is going towards Woodruff style suites.

64 of my credits transferred. Checking in O.P.U.S under the housing plans it showed sophomore status.

NJRome, what was your college GPA before going to Emory and at what school?
Thanks

Hi, NJ.Rome. Congrats on your acceptance! Just wondering, when did you submit your application?

Wow, I just realized this thread is almost a year old… :
